The Capitals ran their season-high losing streak to six with a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Ottawa Senators. A game with no Alex Ovechkin and a noticable lack of fans due to weather was just about as dull as possible. On to the reCap:
Washington Goals: A whole lot of nope.
Braden Holtby: LOSS; 24 Saves; 2 Goals Allowed
Ottawa Goals: Turris 15 (MacArthur, Gryba); Spezza 13 PP (Wiercioch, Karlsson)
Craig Anderson: WIN; 34 Saves; 3 Goals Allowed
Alexander Ovechkin was a late scratch prior to the game. The word is that it's a lower body injury. No word on the severity yet.
There's been plenty of talk about Erskine's poor play of later, and it cost him his spot. It does say something when the young pairing of Carrick-Schmidt is the preferred pairing.
I really need to hear what happened with Holtby on the Turris goal. Seemed to catch an edge backing into the crease and ended up losing balance as the puck went 5-hole.
The time of the Caps power play has clearly passed. Coming in to tonight, the Caps were 1 for there last 13. Tonight, they had just about the worst 0/4 a team could have.
I honestly seemed like this was a game the Caps were meant to win. Time after time, the Senators had wide open looks only to miss the net entirely. Most notably was the Bobby Ryan breakaway in the third when he couldn't put the puck in the empty net.
The Caps themselves need to work on hitting the net. Far too often, they have a slapshot miss the net, sending the opposition on a break the other way.
The Capitals have now been successfully swept by the Senators for the second season in a row.
You now your team is in a rut when trailing 2-0 in the third is seen as impossible to overcome.
This game was honestly terrible. Outside of maybe Carlson and Fehr, the entire team just looked like they would rather be out playing in the snow. This is the time Adam Oates has to step up as the coach. He's starting to run out of time.
