After what feels like another offseason, the Capitals will take the ice tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Verizon Center. After facing off against three Western Conference foes to start the season, the Caps will get their first taste of life in the Metropolitan Division, even if it will still look like an old Southeast battle.
Obviously, the biggest question about following such a long break would be about the line-up. And, indeed, the line-up is slightly different than it was when we saw the Caps in Dallas. Alexander Urbom is set to make his Capital debut, playing alongside Oleksy on the third pairing. Given Oates' hatred of pairing two lefties or two righties, this is expected. That means preseason, rookie stand-out Connor Carrick will be watching from the press box for the first time.
As I mentioned the other day, Michael Latta is back in town after a brief stint being sent down to AHL Hershey. And, as expected, he has knocked Jay Beagle out of the line-up. Maybe it is because of Beagle's play in Dallas, but I think Oates just likes Latta.
Aside from those two swaps, the lines look the same. Holtby to start tonight. Maybe it's not what a lot of fans were hoping for in terms of shaking up the lines, but it's something and we'll just have to get used to having a coach more patient than Bruce Boudreau.
And before I go, my brief two cents on Adam Oates' comments on Sharks rookie Hertl's goal the other night. I honestly don't think it was that big of a deal. I'm sure he isn't the only person in the league (let alone coach) who had problems with the showboating. The difference is that most of those coaches aren't at the end of an 4-day break and have more important questions to answer. It's a slow hockey day so obviously it has to become national news.
