The Washington Capitals have announced that they have assigned defenseman Connor Carrick and center Michael Latta to AHL Hershey. Carrick started the first three games for Washington before being scratched last night in favor of Alexander Urbom. Latta started the season with the Caps, but was sent down to Hershey after one game only to be recalled earlier this week. They have also recalled defenseman Nate Schmidt from AHL Hershey.
The confusing moves continue. I think most people expected the Carrick move. He hasn't looked great in his three games and Steve Oleksy and Alexander Urbom are clearly ahead of him. He will be better off skating top minutes in Hershey than sitting in the press box.
Michael Latta, on the other hand, baffles me. The only reason he was sent down after the Chicago game was the acquisition of Alexander Urbom. It wasn't a big deal as both Beagle and Volpatti were in the press box. Still, Latta was recalled prior to last night's game and looked good last night in his limited ice time. He was physical and drew a couple of penalties. Why recall a guy for one game when you have Beagle. True, Hershey had a week off, but I don't see the good of bouncing Beagle from the line-up just to get Latta game. My best guess would be cap problems.
Nate Schmidt is an interesting call-up. The Caps signed the undrafted rookie last year after a very good college season with Minnesota. He's a good offensive defenseman, scoring 7 goals in 28 games in his junior year at Minnesota. He played his first pro game with Hershey last weekend, collecting his first goal on three shots. With John Erskine set to miss at least tomorrow's game with an undisclosed injury, the Caps wanted to get a left handed shot to fill in. Given the performance of Oleksy-Urbom, Schmidt could be seeing time with John Carlson tomorrow. I would have liked to see Orlov recalled, but apparently the Russian is dealing with some pink eye.
