A little over an hour ago, Washington Post’s Katie Carrera reported that Brooks Laich will make his debut tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Laich was injured while playing in Switzerland during the lockout and, in my opinion, has been a large missing piece in the team’s search for consistency.
While Laich’s stats have been declining over the past couple of seasons (down to only 41 points last season), he has arguably been the most consistent performer over the past 4 years. While I understand the team’s logic in handing the captaincy to Alex Ovechkin, I still feel that Brooks Laich would have been the better choice. He typically logs heavy minutes on the both the powerplay and the penalty kill either as a pivot or on the wing.
As of tonight, it appears he will skate on the left wing alongside Beagle and Hendricks. Provided his groin is fully healed, I would expect to see him back in the top 6 within a week’s time. While Johansson appears to have rediscovered his form as of late, I hope Oates gives Laich a chance on the top line with Backstrom and Ovechkin. Despite being well-liked by Boudreau in the past, Laich was regularly passed over in top line consideration. If the work ethic of Matt Hendricks (which is arguably second only to Laich’s) can get him top line duty, Brooks Laich should be a shoe-in for the spot, especially if the Caps end up out of playoff contention.
Also worth noting, young blueliner Dmitri Orlov appears to make his 2013 debut tonight. Orlov has only recently come back from a concussion, but appears to be playing find. His last game in Hershey he picked up a pair of assists against Adirondack. His recall was necessitated by the loss of Tom Poti to injury in the win against Buffalo. Shocker, it was caused by a Steve Ott crosscheck. Orlov will be the 11th defenceman to suit up for Washington in their 28 games. Only Alzner and Carlson have appeared in every game on the blueline.
