Caps Acquire Urbom; Assign Latta

Just one game into the season, the Washington Capitals have made some small tweaks to their roster, claiming Swedish defenseman Alexander Urbom off waivers from the New Jersey Devils and assigning fourth-line center Michael Latta to AHL Hershey.
Michael Latta, who came to the Caps last season as part of the Filip Forsberg trade, played his first ever NHL game Tuesday night in Chicago. He was largely a non-factor, skating just over six minutes. Latta's a big, physical forward, but still probably needs some fine tuning. And with guys like Aaron Volpatti and Jay Beagle sitting in the press box, it doesn't hurt the Caps to send Latta down to Hershey. Prior to the acquisition of Urbom, Latta was a projected starter tonight against the Calgary Flames. I'd expect Jay Beagle to slide into that fourth-line center position between Tom Wilson and Martin Erat.
Alexander Urbom, 22, was a third round draft pick for the New Jersey Devils in 2009. Over three seasons playing in New Jersey's AHL affiliate Albany Devils, Urbom collected 4 goals and 39 assists. In his 14 games of NHL experience, he has scored 2 goals. At 6'3'', 205 lbs, Urbom will likely present a larger option over rookie Connor Carrick (5'11'', 185), who struggled quite a bit in his debut against Chicago on Tuesday. Carrick will, however, get a jersey against tonight against Calgary
What makes this acquisition so weird is the presence of Steve Oleksy. Oleksy gives the Caps the size and toughness on the backend that they want. Yes, Oleksy will watch from the press box for the second consecutive game. Adam Oates has made some interesting decisions already in this young season (most notably, $4.5 million man Martin Erat on the fourth line), so it will be interesting to see what happens to the roster over the next week.
As always, you can chat with me during tonight's home opener on twitter. @FStreetTate
