Who gets to wear the C in New Jersey

The dust is settled, Zach Parise, captain of the New Jersey Devils, has officially gone home to play hockey with the Minnesota Wild. You can’t blame the guy for wanting to go home and play in front of his family. It’s a decision that a lot of hockey players wish they had the opportunity to make, but it never arises. There is no reason for Parise to become a villain in New Jersey. But with his departure, the Devils are left without a captain. Who will be the player to step in as captain and try to continue to push the success that the team experienced last year?

Devils and Rangers Battle For A Trip To The Stanley Cup

Beginning tonight the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers will begin a seven game series to determine who will be representing the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals. Both teams have had to overcome a great deal of adversity to get to this point, and with the Stanley Cup being so close, it is nothing less then heartbreak to have to go home at the conclusion of the series.

Devils End Flyers Season; Move on to Eastern Conference Finals

In only five games the New Jersey Devils defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, propelling them to a date against the Rangers or Capitals in the Eastern Conference Finals.

In the series against the Flyers, the Devils shed the “tired and sloppy” look for one that suited them much better against the highly-favored Flyers squad. The Devils relied on a strong defensive prowess to shut down the potent offense that the Flyers possessed. What’s even more impressive is the Devils accomplished the five-game series win with a goaltender who just recently turned 40.

Parise and Devils finding secret to success

From Mike Vorkunov of The Star-Ledger:

“I think we really recognized how our team needs to play to win games,” Parise said. “I think we’re starting to do that on a more consistent basis. We understand that we don’t want to exchange rushes, exchange 3-on-2 with teams. We want to play down below the goal line. I think once we’ve seen it work we see it pay off then we really recognize thats how our team needs to play and it’s been working.”

Do you agree with Parise? What have you seen that the Devils are doing right in order to control the series against the Flyers? What are your predictions for tonight’s game? Let me know!

Henrique’s Double-Overtime Goal Sends Devils To Second Round Date With Flyers

The momentum in the Devils/Panthers series ping-ponged back and forth seemingly every game. However, in the decisive final game, the Devils were the one skating victorious. Adam Henrique’s double-overtime goal gave the Devils a 3-2 win and 4-3 series victory.

Devils Facing Elimination Tonight

The sixth seeded New Jersey Devils will be staring elimination in the face tonight when they take on the Florida Panthers in game six of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

The series has had a mix of ups-and-downs for both teams, with games where the offense was potent and others where the defensive won the battles.

With the Devils down 3-2 in the series, they will have to win the last two games in order to advance further in hopes of bringing the Stanley Cup back to New Jersey for the first time since 2002-03.

Brodeur and Giguere Battle Like It’s 2003

If anyone caught the Devils game last night, you witnessed an old-school goaltender duel between Martin Brodeur and Jean-Sebastien Giguere of the Colorado Avalanche. Both goalies pitched shutouts for the game, and the 0-0 battle would need to be decided in a shoot out. Brodeur made 27 saves while Giguere finished with 33. Both goalies made numerous stops and big saves to give their team a chance at victory. Both the Devils and Avs had a few key scoring chances that would of swing the decision in their favor, but the goalies prevailed between the pipes.

Devils React To Adding Marek Zidlicky

All quotes are from Tom Gulitti of The Bergen Record who has worked tirelessly to put out the most recent information. The full articles can be read here, here and here.

Lou Lamoriello on Zidlicky:

On what Zidlicky brings the Devils:
“We had an opportunity to get an experienced right shot, puck-moving defensemen, who can also quarterback a power play and has a lot of experience.”

On what he gave up in the trade to get Zidlicky:
“We felt it was something we wanted to do and none of them (the players traded) are really playing regularly at this point. But we felt this was something to get it done.”

On why he traded Foster in deal after acquiring him earlier this season:
“In my opinion we had a chance to get somebody who was better suited to playing five-on-five, moving the puck out of the zone, jumping in the offense the way can with the type of forwards that we have at this point.”

On whether it make the team much better:
“We certainly wouldn’t have done it if we didn’t think it would make our team better.”

On whether injuries to Adam Larsson and Henrik Tallinder played into the trade:
“I don’t think that came into play because we knew that Adam would be back soon, but the thought process of having somebody young play without big-game experience did come into play when you had an opportunity to get (someone who does).”

On how it was no secret that Zidlicky wanted to come to the Devils:
“That absolutely plays into it with a player of his stature, that he wanted to come here.”

On whether he’s done dealing before the deadline:
“You never know. If you can make the team better, you do. We’re pleased with the addition right now and then we’ll just go from there.”

On whether Zidlicky is a top-two defenseman:
“In our opinion he is.”

On whether he asked Petr Sykora and Patrik Elias (Zidlicky’s good friends) about him:
“We had two people who knew him probably better than anyone in Jacques Lemaire, who coached him in Minnesota, and post-Jacques Lemaire, Dave Barr coached in Minnesota (as an assistant) last year. So, I don’t think you can have a better evaluation of a player than people who are on your own staff. Of course, he was a player that we had a lot of interest in when he was traded from Nashville. So, he was a player that we looked at for a period of time.”

On whether Zidlicky will be here in time for practice Saturday or Sunday’s game vs. Tampa Bay:
“We’re going to do everything we can to get him in. He’s in Dallas right now.”

Devils news and notes

- Nick Palmieri and Stephane Veilleux were both called up from the Albany Devils. They will play tonight against the Sabres. In the morning practice the morning, Veilleux skated with Jacob Josefson and Cam Janssen. Palmieri skated as an extra.

- According to Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger, Martin Brodeur has made a few tweaks to his pads and is now reaping the reward.

Since the All-Star break, the 6-2, 220-pound Brodeur has tweaked his leg pads and he’s 4-0-1 and playing some of his best hockey of the season.

Brodeur has lengthened his leg pads from 36 inches to 37 inches, and increased the width at the top of the pads from 9 1/2 inches to “about 10 1/4 to 10 1/2 inches,’’ he said. The bottom remains the maximum allowed (11 inches).

“For me, I think it protects a little more the five hole,” said Brodeur, who’ll be in net on Tuesday night when the Devils (31-20-4) travel to Buffalo (24-25-6). “When I go down on the butterfly there’s a little more pad there then I used to have. I always played with my pads wider at the bottom and tapered at the top like goalies did in the 1990s. Now I’m more in line with what other goalies wear around the league. I just wanted to see if I was able to play with something a little bigger and cover a little more net. It feels pretty good.”

Foster - Australian for beer, or maybe just goal

After being benched by Head Coach Pete DeBoer a game before against Montreal, Kurtis Foster came out to play against the Philadelphia Flyers with a chip on his shoulder. He responded the only way that anyone could think of when trying to come up with a solution on how to impress their coach: produce. Foster netted a pair of power-play goals, one in the first and one in the second. Alexei Ponikarovsky would eventually be credited with the game winning goal in the Devils 6-4 defeat of the Flyers.

Henrique Battling Injury; Clarkson Having Memorable Year

Per Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger

“Devils rookie Adam Henrique remains sidleined with a groin injury and did not practice again today.”

The Devils have missed Henrique the past few games, as he has been on of the driving forces offensively behind Patrik Elias (who is expected to play Thursday), Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk.

Martin Brodeur will get the start on Thursday against the Montreal Canadians. It will be his seventh start in a row.

Is Zach Parise On His Way Out Of New Jersey?

From The Fourth Period:

The Devils, who need to meet payroll twice a month until the end of regular season, are considering trading team captain Zach Parise for draft picks.

Parise is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and the team’s reported financial woes could put the Devils in a tough situation as to whether they can or are even able to re-sign him.

The 27-year-old is earning a $6 million cap hit this season and his value is only expected to go up as he has posted 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 47 games this season.

New Jersey Devils To Face Tough Task Against Bruins; Kovalchuk Heating Up On The Ice

The Bruins came to the Prudential Center about two weeks ago and unloaded every container of ammunition they seemed to have on them. The Devils were embarrassed on their home ice with the game finishing a very lopsided 6-1. In that game, the Devils were careless with the puck, forgot how to backcheck and never had their legs underneath them after the horn sounded to end the first period. With so many holes to try to plug, the Bruins walked all over the Devils and Martin Brodeur, who had a forgetful outing.

A Breath Of Fresh Air - Devils Turning Things Around Nicely

I suppose it took a 6-1 trouncing by the Boston Bruins for the Devils to finally open their eyes. Over these past couple of games, the Devils have been playing a dominant style of hockey consisting of three equal parts: strong offense, shut-down defense and solid goaltending.

The Devils have defeated the Florida Panthers (5-2) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-1) in back-to-back games and have shown no sign of wear and tear.

Parise and Henrique shine during win; Foster to play tonight

On their way to a 5-4 victory last night, the New Jersey Devils were led by strong performances on the ice by Zach Parise and Adam Henrique. The see-saw battle came down to the final minutes, where the Lightning forced a fair amount of pressure in trying to sneak in and force overtime. Parise and Henrique both finished the night with a goal and two assists.

“It was fun. Ideally we’d like to be able to put the clamps down at the end and shut them down a little better,” Parise said to Rich Chere of the Star Ledger. “We’ll have to keep talking about that and keep working on that. We have to do a better job of putting teams out of it when we have the lead.”

Alarming Stats From Recent Four-Game Skid

There is no other way to word it other then to say that the Devils have been horrible these past couples weeks. Devils Kicking Themselves After Overturned Decision

After securing a 1-0 victory in the first half of a home-at-home series against the Islanders, the Devils looked to bring home another win to help propel them in the standings. Down 3-2 with six seconds left in the third period, Zach Parise pushed to the front of the net after an offensive zone faceoff win and pushed the puck past Isles goalie Al Montoya. The ruling was called a goal on the ice. The game had been tied with one second left on the clock.

But wait…

Can An Offensive Showcase Push Devils Back Into Playoffs?

After last years disappointing season, the Devils are quickly trying to turn the page. Head coach Peter DeBoer is trying to help keep the past stay in the past. After the Devils opened the season with a 3-0 loss, however, the whispers started to begin that the Devils were no better then last years shaky squad. With the emergence of a healthy Zach Parise teamed up with the powerhouse scoring ability of Ilya Kovalchuk and the dynamic on ice ability of Patrik Elias, can the Devils make it back into the playoffs on nothing more then offense?

Parise and Devils Fall to Flyers

With the first game of the New Jersey Devils season under their belt, it is time to take a look at the game and analyze how to move forward from here.

With all the hype surrounding the return of Zach Parise and the Devils, everything seemed to fall flat on the ice when it came time to make things happen. The Devils would eventually fall 3-0, and look outplayed the whole way through.

Parise Becomes Next Captain Of Devils

The announcement has finally been made.

Zach Parise will lead the team out onto the ice as the new captain of the New Jersey Devils.

Of course the decision comes as basically no surprise, as Parise was the logical choice to become the next captain after the departure of Jaime Langenbrunner.

There was only one hitch in the decision of Parise becoming captain, and that is his contract issue.

The Devils Case To Be A Contender In The Atlantic

Since the New Jersey Devils have just wrapped up their final preseason game, it is time to take a look into the regular season crystal ball. With the outlook of the team, I don’t see how the Devils could miss the playoffs, and further more not be contenders for the Atlantic Division. I will provide a team breakdown, and offer my opinion on how the Devils could possibly walk away with the victories.

Devils Grab Overtime Victory From Rangers

The Devils took on the Rangers tonight, and played well enough to walk away with a win. Potential captain Patrik Elias potted the decisive goal seconds into the overtime period after Zach Parise collected a wild pass from a Steve Eminger of the Rangers and got it to Elias at the right time.

Stephane Veilleux of the Devils and Andre Deveaux of the Rangers received 10 minute game misconducts each for fighting and instigating. Veilleux was unsuccessful in goating Sean Avery into a fight.

Possible Starting Lines, Clarkson And Sykora Looking To Make A Splash

Right off the bat, head coach Peter DeBoer liked what he saw when Patrik Elias and Zach Parise took the ice together on the first line. His eyes had to of gotten bigger when he saw Ilya Kovalchuk and Jacob Josefson run the second line of offense. Barring any major injuries, the Devils could be boasting a pretty nice looking offensive unit this coming season.
