Travis Zajac Inks New Deal With Devils

The New Jersey Devils have announced that they have signed Travis Zajac to an eight-year, 46-million dollar extension according to Lou Lamoriello.

Tom Gulitti of The Record reports that Lamoriello and Zajac had been working on the deal during the lockout.

Zajac was scheduled to make $4.8 million this season (that number will be pro-rated for 48 games) in the final year of a four-year, $15.55 million contract he signed as a restricted free agent in 2009.

Lamoriello said the sides were working on the extension for Zajac before the lockout began and completed it this week.

Who gets to wear the C in New Jersey

The dust is settled, Zach Parise, captain of the New Jersey Devils, has officially gone home to play hockey with the Minnesota Wild. You can’t blame the guy for wanting to go home and play in front of his family. It’s a decision that a lot of hockey players wish they had the opportunity to make, but it never arises. There is no reason for Parise to become a villain in New Jersey. But with his departure, the Devils are left without a captain. Who will be the player to step in as captain and try to continue to push the success that the team experienced last year?

Devils Split First Two Games With Panthers

The first two games in Florida are over and the Devils, who are favored even though they are the six seed, have split the games with the Panthers. Both games were hard fought for the Devils, however, an early lead for the Panthers in game two was one of the reasons the Devils couldn’t mount the necessary comeback. Heading back to New Jersey, the Devils will have to turn up the heat and walk away with two additional wins before locking up the series in Florida.

Zajac Scores Decisive Goal In Shoot Out Win Over Blackhawks

The New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks had a real defensive battle last night. Martin Brodeur played amazingly well considering his team was severely outshot in the game. With a 1-1 score, the game would need to be settled in a shootout. After just returning to the lineup the other game, Travis Zajac came out as the fifth shooter and snapped a shot over Corey Crawford to score the decisive goal. The two points tonight puts the Devils just four points out of securing a playoff spot.

“It’s been great,” Zajac said to Tom Gulitti of The Bergen Record. “I felt like I haven’t sat out for most of the year, actually. The locker room, it’s a good group of guys in here. It’s easy to get along with everyone. So, that’s been easy. That’s been the easy part.”

Travis Zajac Still Making Strides In Recovery

It seems that Devils center Travis Zajac is continuing to move closer to a return with the team. He is ruled out against the game tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs, but I could see him making a return sometime around Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning currently sit in 12th place in the Eastern Conference. No one has given up more goals this year then Tampa Bay.

“We’re not going to rush it,” DeBoer said to Tom Gulitti of The Bergen Record. “It wasn’t him saying he’s not ready. I never said that he would play tonight. You guys insinuated that. I said he was day to day all along and we woke up today and decided day to day doesn’t mean today.”

Devils want to win for DeBoer

“Pete has done an outstanding job,” Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said to Dave Hutchinson of The Star Ledger. “He knows what he wants. He’s comfortable and confident in his own skin and is open to suggestions. It’s his honesty and forthrightness that I like. He’s very communicative with his players.”

“All the guys want to play for Pete,” Parise said. “The mode and atmosphere around the locker room is great. He has done an awesome job.”

“You have to get guys to buy into your system and I think Pete has done that with his demeanor,” veteran goalie Martin Brodeur said. “He does a good job getting everybody involved, it’s not just a one-man show. Also, he understands the ups and downs of a season and is good about taking care of guys by giving them days off.”

Devils news and notes

- Nick Palmieri and Stephane Veilleux were both called up from the Albany Devils. They will play tonight against the Sabres. In the morning practice the morning, Veilleux skated with Jacob Josefson and Cam Janssen. Palmieri skated as an extra.

- According to Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger, Martin Brodeur has made a few tweaks to his pads and is now reaping the reward.

Since the All-Star break, the 6-2, 220-pound Brodeur has tweaked his leg pads and he’s 4-0-1 and playing some of his best hockey of the season.

Brodeur has lengthened his leg pads from 36 inches to 37 inches, and increased the width at the top of the pads from 9 1/2 inches to “about 10 1/4 to 10 1/2 inches,’’ he said. The bottom remains the maximum allowed (11 inches).

“For me, I think it protects a little more the five hole,” said Brodeur, who’ll be in net on Tuesday night when the Devils (31-20-4) travel to Buffalo (24-25-6). “When I go down on the butterfly there’s a little more pad there then I used to have. I always played with my pads wider at the bottom and tapered at the top like goalies did in the 1990s. Now I’m more in line with what other goalies wear around the league. I just wanted to see if I was able to play with something a little bigger and cover a little more net. It feels pretty good.”

How Good Is Adam Henrique?

For the time being forget Patrik Elias, Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise. Year in and year out, Devils fans expect these three individuals to perform to the best of their abilities every game. Their season point totals should always hover above 80 points, and if they don’t, we all have something to say. However, there has been someone added to the team this year who has exceeded almost everyones expectations, and his name is Adam Henrique.

Travis Zajac to make debut on Friday

After fully recovering from an offseason Achilles injury, Travis Zajac will make his season debut with the New Jersey Devils on Friday night against the Dallas Stars. The night adds and extra sense of nostalgia, as former Devils defenseman Scott Niedermayer will have his jersey raised to the rafters prior to the puck drop.

Zajac Back With Team

“I feel good. My legs are good. Everything is coming together,” Zajac said. “Now it’s just getting back into game shape. Hopefully before Christmas is the plan. We’ll see. I feel good now. It’s just little things, getting back into shape, and timing has a lot to do with it. Getting the hands and feet working at the same time. As soon as that comes—I’m sure it will be sooner than later—I have to be patient and make sure I’m feeling at my best to get back in.”

Alarming Stats From Recent Four-Game Skid

There is no other way to word it other then to say that the Devils have been horrible these past couples weeks. After loses against the Islanders, Wild, Avalanche and Jets, the Devils morale is literally down in the dumps. To make matters worse, Devils beat reporter Rich Chere provided these alarming statistics over their most recent trip.

Travis Zajac eyeing return; Elias nearing milestone

After an Achilles tear that required surgery in August, New Jersey Devils center Travis Zajac is in the waining stages of his recovery process.

“It’s anywhere from just over three months to six months,” Zajac told Rich Chere on the telephone from Winnipeg. “I guess it depends on a lot of things. Being an athlete and being young, I think I should be on the lower end of that time frame. But I’m definitely not going to rush back.”

Brodeur Returns; Zajac Skates

For the first time since injuring his shoulder against the Los Angeles Kings, Martin Brodeur will step back between the pipes to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at “The Rock” tonight.

“I’m looking forward to it,’’ Brodeur said after today’s morning skate. “It’s been a long time for me. Even in the season, I’ve only played one (full) game, so I never got any momentum going as far as my game’s concerned. The team is playing well, not getting any points, lately, so we’re going to definitely try to get to that right now.’‘

Parise Becomes Next Captain Of Devils

The announcement has finally been made.

Zach Parise will lead the team out onto the ice as the new captain of the New Jersey Devils.

Of course the decision comes as basically no surprise, as Parise was the logical choice to become the next captain after the departure of Jaime Langenbrunner.

There was only one hitch in the decision of Parise becoming captain, and that is his contract issue.
