Some loose ends before a date with the Islanders

Just some news and notes for anyone who is interested before the Devils take on the Islanders tomorrow on the Island.

Bryce Salvador has been named the captain of the New Jersey Devils, replacing Zach Parise who has since moved on to play for Minnesota. Seems to be a pretty well-supported pick by the players.

“I think it’s a great choice,” said Ilya Kovalchuk to Tom Gulitti of The Record. “Like Pete (DeBoer) said, there’s a lot of leadership in this group and it’s tough to put letters on every jersey. Even the guys who don’t have a letter, they have to do their job and that’s what they were doing all year last year. The core of the captains they’re staying the same and Bryce he is a great leader and it’s well deserved that C and I’m sure he’ll be a great captain.”

“I think they did the right thing,” right wing David Clarkson said. “He’s one of those guys who leads. He leads by he way he plays. He was actually my roommate for a while too, so I learned a lot from him. I was excited to hear that today, that a guy like him would get it. I’m sure it was a tough decision for the coaches and Mr. (Lou) Lamoriello, but at the end of the day I believe they picked a guy that’s a true leader and a quality individual.”

In an interview with Rich Chere of The Star Ledger, Salvador talked about being named captain.

“It’s been really interesting the last two years for me personally, to miss a season and not really know what was going to happen or what the future was going to be,” Salvador said. “Then the team had a good year last year. To be named the captain, I don’t know what the odds of that would’ve been in Vegas two years ago. That being said, it’s the team around you that builds a captain.”

“I lead by example. Every now and then I like to give it to a few guys,” Salvador said. “I’ve been characterized a lot as being a silent leader, just come and make sure you’re ready to go every day. That part isn’t going to change.”

I personally thought after the contract extension that Travis Zajac, the Devils iron-horse, would become the new captain but apparently Salvador is the answer. I also saw a lot of talk about how Kovalchuk should have become the new captain. As long as the players are happy and support Salvador, which they seem too, then everything will be just fine. The last two Devils captains who were defensemen were Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermayer. Things turned out well for the Devils during that span of time, so who knows.

The Devils are also officially out of the Scott Gomez sweepstakes as of earlier this evening. Gulitti tweeted that the Devils did have a decent amount of interest in Gomez but that he is ultimately going to sign with a team in the west.

Stefan Matteau has also made the Devils opening roster. Matteau was the Devils first round pick in the NHL draft.

“First game in the NHL it’s what I’ve dreamed about, but I’ve got to stop dreaming,” Matteau said to Gulitti. “I want to stick here. That’s my goal. I’ve just got to work my heart out.”

With that being said, the Devils have also placed Bobby Butler on waivers which will clear sometime tomorrow afternoon I believe.

“He did well in camp, but we don’t feel he’s ready yet,” Devils GM Lamoriello said. "Hopefully, he clears (waivers) and goes down and plays, which he needs. He did well, like a lot of our other kids did. We’re going to start making some decisions and that’s what the reason was.”

I am an all around NHL fan. I love to watch Atlantic Division, and root for the Philadelphia Flyers. Just because I cheer for the Flyers, doesn’t mean I don’t keep up with the other teams in the division, specifically the New Jersey Devils. Devils Advocate will provide you with the most important Devils news, filled with my opinion about the selected topic.
