Quality of the product?

As each day passes it seems as if the PA and the NHL are making some agreements towards a new CBA barring any tremendous setbacks in the negotiations. With that being said, it seems as if there may be an abbreviated season on the horizon (fingers crossed).

The question I pose to all of you is what do you think the quality of play will be if the game is actually to return? Obviously there will be some time for mini camps but the actual season would begin rather quickly. Some players have went to other countries to play while some of the younger guys ventured to the AHL and other leagues. Other players have seemingly done nothing except skate at local rinks and continue to work out. Do you think the overall quality of the game will decrease if the NHL season is to take place?

look at the nba. a ton of injuries, fringe and younger players stepping up, some vets’ jobs gone come july, more than the usual number of retirements.

nobody’s ever out and out said it, but the rule changes also helped the owners. a better product on ice, plus a lot of expensive vets who couldn’t keep up after the last lockout? cheaper, faster rosters for nothing!

Outside of injuries, I don’t think the product on the ice will be any better or worse.
Most games will still be 5 gpg, with one or both teams scoring 2 goals or less (nearly 90% of games in the past 4 seasons have ended in that scenario) and a giant chunk of the goals will be of the scramble/deflection/screen/rebound variety.

So no, the ‘quality’ won’t be any different than what it was.

I think the product will be outstanding.  It is very rare to have most teams almost completely rested and injury-free.  I don’t think the players that haven’t been in other league will need much time to get their legs back, as they all seem to be workout fiends.  The quality of play may not be reflected in the scores, but I think we will see above-average play on the ice, and since there will be so few games, it should be closer to a playoff atmosphere in the games, as each will count even more.

It may be interesting to see the really good players who have been playing overseas matching up against decent players who have just been putting in time around the rinks.

I’d expect it to start slow, but rev up real quick.

About Devil's Advocate

I am an all around NHL fan. I love to watch Atlantic Division, and root for the Philadelphia Flyers. Just because I cheer for the Flyers, doesn’t mean I don’t keep up with the other teams in the division, specifically the New Jersey Devils. Devils Advocate will provide you with the most important Devils news, filled with my opinion about the selected topic.
