The Devils have begun to trim their roster in order to get it down to the necessary limit.
Rod Pelley, Mark Fraser, Jay Leach, Peter Harrold, Vladimir Zharkov, Tim Sestito, Stephane Veilleux and Matt Corrente have been put on and cleared waivers.
Pelley and Fraser are going to stay with the Devils for now, and the rest of the group will be making the trip to Albany to begin their season there.
Also not receiving a roster spot is Steve Bernier, who was brought to the team on a try out basis this offseason.
Bernier was one of the few who came to the Devils on a try out. The others include Petr Sykroa and Anton Stralman.
There were rumors that Bernier turned down a two-way contract offer from the Devils. However, Lou Lamoriello has come out and said that the Devils never actually offered Bernier a contract, and therefore, had nothing to turn down.
Per Rich Chere of The Star Ledger:
“He was not offered a contract. He didn’t refuse anything,” Lamoriello said today. “There was an excellent conversation with him.”
Lamoriello said Bernier played well in the preseason but was caught in a numbers game as the team tries to get down to the 23-player limit.
Devils fans all along the blogisphere are predicting that the battle for the final defensive opening between Fayne and Stralman has been won by Fayne. We will have to wait and see if Stralman has in fact been denied a contract offer. His departure would only help lower the Devils roster number.
The Devils have until Wednesday to lower their roster to 23 people. They are currently at 25 players on the active roster.

I am an all around NHL fan. I love to watch Atlantic Division, and root for the Philadelphia Flyers. Just because I cheer for the Flyers, doesn’t mean I don’t keep up with the other teams in the division, specifically the New Jersey Devils. Devils Advocate will provide you with the most important Devils news, filled with my opinion about the selected topic.
