Canucks and Beyond

A few weeks ago, Vancouver decided they didn’t have much need for Matt Pettinger and so he was sent down to the Manitoba Moose. But injuries over the weekend have left the Canucks with only 10 forwards ready to ice for tonight’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets and so they sought to bring Pettinger (and Kyle Wellwood) back up from the minors.
However, this morning Pettinger was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning. From TSN:
The Tampa Bay Lightning made a minor shuffle to their roster on Tuesday, claiming forward Mike Pettinger off re-entry waivers from the Vancouver Canucks and placing winger Jason Ward on waivers.
Assuming Wellwood clears waivers, he’ll be playing in place of Pavol Demitra tonight.
Update 9:55am PT: The TSN link above confirms that Wellwood cleared waivers today.
Update 11:10am PT: Jason Krog has been recalled to the Canucks as well.
Rather unexpectedly, Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood have suddenly become guys the Canucks are desperate to hang onto. From Ben Kuzma at Canucks Nation:
The Vancouver Canucks hope to augment their injury-riddled lineup with Matt Pettinger and Kyle Wellwood, should the forwards not be claimed today on recallable waivers from the Manitoba Moose.
Should an NHL club claim either forward, the Canucks would be on the hook for half of their salaries — $500,000 US for Pettinger and $498,750 US for Wellwood — but they have plenty of salary cap space. Money is not the problem for general manager Mike Gillis. Healthy bodies are.
As Kuzma notes, Pavol Demitra, Rick Rypien, and Darcy Hordichuk are all out for Tuesday’s game against Columbus. It’s like a 2007 re-run, except in this year’s edition the team is decimating its forward corps.
(Well, except for Sami Salo—but I think we all had Sami Salo penciled-in for a pulled groin this week anyway…)
In just 24 seconds, 35-year old Darwin Head went from being a sawmill worker to Canada’s newest millionaire, as the Prince Albert, SK, resident scored the $1 million grand prize tonight in TSN’s second annual, international award-winning million-dollar giveaway, the Chevrolet Malibu Million Dollar Shootout.
I’ll put up the video as soon as someone else Youtubes it (sorry, I was busy DVRing “Law & Order” for some idiotic reason). However—if you’re lucky—the video link on the TSN page will work for you. (Didn’t for me, but TSN hates Firefox as a rule.)
It should be said that Darwin Head was as cool as anything shooting from the point, AND—now that he’s got his first million bucks—I’m pretty sure he’ll play for cheap! How’d you miss this guy, Nonis?
(Oh yeah, right… blinded by dreams of Pettinger…)
