Press release via Marketwire:
The Vancouver Canucks and Direct Energy announce the return of Direct Energy’s “You Call the Shots Contest,” where one lucky fan will experience what it is like to be General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks for a day. Direct Energy’s “You Call the Shots Contest” will award one fortunate fan and three friends a rare hockey prize package that will allow the group to experience a day in the life of an NHL General Manager.
You and me? Calling the shots? Well, hell, I’m in. What kind of stuff is involved?
“It was an experience that I will never forget,” said Lori Jones, who won the contest last year and lived her GM-for-a-day dream along with her husband, his brother and father. “My husband and I are huge Canucks fans and it was a terrific thrill for us and our family.”
Sounds excellent, but I wonder what Lori did with all that power. Is she the one to blame for the Canucks missing the playoffs last year? What in God’s name did they allow her to do??
The contest will grant one fan and three friends the opportunity to meet Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis, catch the team’s morning skate at General Motors Place and watch a game from Gillis’ private box. They’ll also get a behind-the-scenes tour, a VIP dining experience, a centre-ice photo opportunity and a team-autographed jersey.
Umm. Alright, I guess we can’t blame Lori for the Canucks’ April Meltdown.
But we’ve learned something. Here is what’s required for one’s NHL General Manager Resume:
- watching morning skates
- watching games from luxury boxes
- visit dressing room and arena restaurants
- take photos of self with players
Sounds fun, but heck, I’ve done all those things at least once. And I’m not taking a job that cool and walking away with just an autographed jersey (although I will be taking that jersey, thanks). Oh no. I’d be doing at least some kind of damage that day.
If I was only allowed to do one big thing, I’d have to say that the freshly-unemployed Alain Vigneault wouldn’t be a happy camper (sorry, AV; it ain’t personal).
How about you?
You’re Canucks GM for a day and you’re allowed one big thing you to leave your mark on the team—what would you do?
