Canucks and Beyond

“No Rest for the Wicked” as they say.  Or the Canucks.

It’s no secret that the Canucks are reeling from injuries—and at a bad time as the playoffs loom closer—which leads one to consider this, from The Province:

Given the nine-point lead over the Flyers, it shouldn’t take the remainder of the schedule for Vancouver to clinch first overall, leaving three or four meaningless games before the playoffs start. At which point you might be tempted to ask, can’t the Canucks just forfeit and get some rest?

On the plus side, no more stretchers and surgeries for any more Canucks (*prayers for Manny Malhotra and Dan Hamhuis would be appropriate here).  But on the other hand, the scoring race is probably pretty important to you if your name is Sedin.  Further, there’s always the argument that gliding into the playoffs after virtually laying around for two weeks isn’t the best way to get your team’s motor in high gear heading into the first round.

Cam Cole yesterday laments…

If only the Canucks, unthreatened at the top of the NHL standings and just keeping the engine running in anticipation of the playoffs, could have encased their roster in bubble wrap since they all but clinched the top seed.

If only. But since that ship has already sailed, do we advocate bubble-wrapping the remaining roster?  Locking Bieksa in a padded room?  Sealing Sedins in a hypoberic chamber while feeding them through a tube?

Or do we just cross our fingers and let them play it out the way they know how?

Common sense would mostly indicate locking them down, I admit.  But if I had to choose, I’d let them just play it out.  There’s no way to guarantee the future, every game might bring its own challenges, no matter how cautious they are.

I’m just going to cross my fingers and hope they keep playing their game.  It’s worked well for them so far—no reason to panic now, right?

I think it is probably worth shuffling the defence round a bit - give all of the top guys a night off to recharge their batteries, because they’ll need to be a top condition for the playoffs. May also be an idea to keep Sami Salo away from sharp, fast-moving, or indeed any objects whatsoever.

Very good idea. If only we could dress Salo in a Michelin Man uniform before every game. smile

Any time the Canucks have ‘rested’ players heading into the playoffs, they have stunk it up in the first round.  Just keep playing…if your number is up (for an injury), your number is up.
