From last night’s pre-game ceremonies—
On a related topic, ESPN’s Roy S. Johnson has a piece out today on the issue of depression among many throughout professional sports.

It’s been a hard one to deal with, hasn’t it? Every time I think of him, and of what he was going through, it just guts me. But I suppose, if nothing else, maybe it will help make me more vigilant about the health of my friends and family, and recognizing when they’re in trouble.
Although the fact that Rypien had so much help—and as you say, he recognized his problem and reached out for help repeatedly, and yet his loved ones still lost him—really is the scary thing about such severe depression.

Alanah McGinley has been blogging hockey since 2003 (with a notable gap in time through 2010, kicking it with new baby Lucy while living knee-deep in chaos while reading "parenting for complete idiots" during every spare minute) sharing opinions, rants and not-so-deep thoughts with anyone who will listen.
In addition to writing Canucks & Beyond and helping manage Kukla's Korner, Alanah was one of the founders and co-hosts of The Crazy Canucks Podcast. She has contributed pieces to FoxSports.com and the New York Times Slapshot blog, as well as other stray destinations in cyberspace.

I catch myself just mumbling…awww Ryp…when I see these tributes.
Throughout life, I have had a hard time feeling pity for those that take their own life. But this one is just so tragic. He reached out for help several times…he had lots of support around him…and yet, he succumbed. The grip of the depression far more powerful than all those around him ever thought.
RIP Ryp…your legacy may be bigger than you ever thought your NHL career may have been.
