About that Kiss…

The couple whose passionate kiss was captured in a now-iconic photograph of the Vancouver hockey riots are an Australian and Canadian who have been dating for several months.

The photo shows Scott Jones and Alex Thomas in a fervent embrace on the street between a police line and another officer in full riot gear. Taken by Rich Lam for Getty Images, the picture has been splashed all over the Internet and in media outlets around the world.

The circumstances are explained below (from ABC News):

But they now say the story is not what people thought. [...]

“The riot police ran on top of us,” said Jones in a telephone interview with ABC News. “They ran us over.

“We were knocked over, and I was just trying to calm her down, because as I’m sure you can imagine, she was somewhat distraught.”

Jones said he remembered kissing Thomas, and was completely surprised by the photograph.

Aside from hockey, I’m a big fan of photography, and freelance photographer Richard Lam certainly captured a remarkable shot amidst the chaos of Wednesday night.

Oh Brother.  How stoned were these two.  What a pathetic lot we have become.

I think that’s a pretty serious accusation to make, given the reputation of the photographer. Richard Lam is hardly some unknown photographer. He’s a fairly accomplished photojournalist.

I can’t speak to the photo you linked, being that I wasn’t there, but I think there’s still room to believe their explanation—that she was knocked down and he was just comforting her quickly.  Is it not reasonable to also believe other people stopped along the way to check she was alright?

Unless Lam comes out and says otherwise, that’s my thoughts on it, anyway.

It wasn’t a romantic kiss.  They were caught in the middle of the Stupid Canadians and she was hurt/upset or some such.  The other people in LIMH’s picture are helping as well.

Oh, and nice legs!  wink

Alanah, I saw an interview with the photographer and it definitely wasn’t staged.  He was shooting hundreds of photos as all the chaos was happening and was quite surprised at the shot he had captured.  After the night was over and he was going through all his pictures to see what he had and what would be sent out to wire services, a couple of people helping him burst into laughter at the moment he had caught but previous and subsequent shots of the whole situation prove that the young man’s explanation was correct about her being knocked down and he was just trying to comfort her.
