How I Became a Tabloid Hockey Blogger

image
Recently I got the notion to index some old blog posts and hockey articles I've written around the web over the last couple years, to set up a page of links to the semi-interesting stuff. But while scrolling through my archives, I suddenly got sidetracked by Rachel Hunter, of all people -- yes, I'm talking about the supermodel. A brief post I wrote referring to Hunter last summer never seems to die, and I figure it's a decent example of what happens when Pop Culture Meets Hockey Culture. So here's a re-hash of the experience.

A Shiny, Clean Blog—Don’t Mess It Up!

Welcome to this shiny new hockey blog. My previous address -- Vancouver Canucks Op Ed -- is now firmly buried 6 feet under, so it's time for a fresh new project. You can read more about me here if you like. It's not very informative, but I amused myself, anyway. So... whateverinthehell will I talk about now? Well, I'll start by thanking my host, Kukla's Korner. Paul Kukla has done everything possible to get this site up and running, and really couldn't be a better friend in general. And a big thank you to Paul's web guru, Kathy, who's also been incredibly helpful. A toast to you both! Now onto some slightly more sinister news. I'm afraid I share these accommodations with a very troublesome next door neighbor. You know the type I mean -- the kind who pulls his car into the driveway next door and you just KNOW, simply by the way he spins his tires and laughs at his own jokes, that he's gonna drive you freakin' insane. For me, that neighbor is Abel to Yzerman, also a resident writer here's at Kukla's. We've been known to exchange obnoxious banter from time to time, so I imagine it will degenerate into a public spectacle eventually. But it's all in fun... I think. Besides, he's a Red Wings fan. They're all a bit touched in the head. (Sorry, Paul.) Finally, thank you to everyone joining me from VCOE and to new visitors checking in for the first time today. I hope you have some fun here once I get settled in. As long-time readers know, I'm not the terribly serious-type, so don't be expecting deep thoughts and complex analysis too frequently (or ever). You're more likely to find disconnected ranting, bad photoshop efforts and light humor about the NHL and the Canucks around here. That approach has been working for me for three years... why stop now?! Anyway, I've got some entertaining new ideas up my sleeve for sometime in the new year -- just gotta survive Christmas first. Cheers!

This is Just a Test…

Nothing much to see here -- yet. But since people are starting to accidentally stumble onto this new hockey blog, I figured I should explain myself briefly. First of all, this is Canucks & Beyond and it's located at http://www.canucksandbeyond.com . If you're reading this, you're probably one of the subscribers to Vancouver Canucks Op Ed, and the news feed you once got from over there will now be coming from this new blog. Make sense yet? To me, neither. But tech geeks smarter than myself say that's what's gonna happen, and who am I to argue? Anyway, as I mentioned last week, VCOE is being laid to rest as I start a new project, and this is it.

Now, shhhhh! Be quiet and don't tell anybody! This blog will hopefully be up and ready to go on Monday, December 18th.
See you then... Alanah P.S. If you simply have no idea how you ended up here -- or who the hell I am -- you can find out more here.

About Canucks and Beyond

Alanah McGinley has been blogging hockey since 2003 (with a notable gap in time through 2010, kicking it with new baby Lucy while living knee-deep in chaos while reading "parenting for complete idiots" during every spare minute) sharing opinions, rants and not-so-deep thoughts with anyone who will listen.

In addition to writing Canucks & Beyond and helping manage Kukla's Korner, Alanah was one of the founders and co-hosts of The Crazy Canucks Podcast. She has contributed pieces to FoxSports.com and the New York Times Slapshot blog, as well as other stray destinations in cyberspace.

So that's me. Who the hell are you? smile
