Canucks and Beyond
Vancouver at Edmonton: 7pm PT CBC
Edmonton may have all those Cups (not to mention a large contingent of smug fans reminding us of those Cups every other week!) but they’ve certainly had better days. Currently on a 4-game home losing streak and sitting in 11th place in the West, they’ve still got a slim chance of making the playoffs but it would require some stellar play and even more-stellar good luck.
That being said, they just might get what they want tonight.
With a Vancouver team undoubtedly reeling from recent tragedy in their midst, and the Oilers themselves desperate to end that home losing streak plus keep their playoff hopes alive, Edmonton is a fair bet to win their final game of the season versus the Canucks.
The season series is 3-2 in favor of Vancouver and there are plenty of tangibles and intangibles in Vancouver’s favor tonight—I’ve listed them all below, cropped from the NHL’s game notes. But it’s still anyone’s game.
I’d never bet against Vancouver these days, but I’d probably hold onto my wallet tonight. It’s a tough call.
Noted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
When the Penguins lost to Detroit, so did Post-Gazette editorial cartoonist Rob Rogers. He made a bet with Detroit Free Press cartoonist Mike Thompson that he’d don a Red Wings jersey if the Pens went down. Today, Rob made good on his wager.

From Dan Murphy at Sportsnet.ca:
When Dave Nonis was fired and replaced by Gillis, I was among the many who thought Vigneault was on very shaky ground. I mean, how many times do you see a coach survive a GM change? It’s common practise for the new GM to bring in “his guy.”
Now I know what you’re thinking. Gillis is simply keeping Vigneault on so he has a fall guy if things don’t start out well this season. Perhaps. [...]
[But if ] I was a betting man (and I’m going to Vegas this weekend so you better believe I am) I would lay odds that we’ll hear news about a Vigneault extension before we hear about a Vigneault dismissal. But that’s just me.
Hmm. Perhaps. But if I was a betting woman (and I don’t go anywhere near Vegas as a rule because I am, and I’m really, really bad at it) I would lay odds that we’ll be hearing more about that “fall guy” plan, not a dismissal or an extension.
Seems like just the right approach for a clever new GM looking to build some personal job security in this business.
It's almost like a sign of the seasons, the regularity with which I make -- and lose -- stupid hockey bets. In this latest episode, witness this March email exchange between myself and "Sailor Boy" IwoCPO of Abel to Yzerman...
IwoCPO: So, playoffs coming up. What are we betting? Alanah: I don't bet anymore. IwoCPO: Sure you do. Let's bet points, first round. I pick PavelSo yeah, I lost. God, how I hate Detroit fans. And by the way, anyone that copies this photo and reposts it anywhere, dies. That includes you, Sailor Boy. ____________________________ Note: A big "thank you" to Eddy's Hockey Shop here on Vancouver Island, who took pity on me, allowing me to borrow this horrible jersey. I'm exchanging it for a vintage Roberto Luongo one next week.
DattysuckyDatsyuk Alanah: I pick Daniel Sedin. IwoCPO: Loser wears an Avalanche jersey and posts a photo. Alanah: I'm not that drunk. IwoCPO: Loser wears the winner's jersey Alanah: Whatever. IwoCPO: Fine. Alanah: Sucker.
