Avs a better team with McGinn on the roster?

The Colorado Avalanche were behind one of the few bigger trades of the deadline, as they sent Winnik, Galiardi and a 7th round pick to San Jose Sharks. In return they got Jamie McGinn, Mike Connolly and Michael Sgarbossa.

To be honest, I don’t know much about the players the Avalanche got in return. I know who we sent away, though. And I know some about McGinn, but it will be very interesting to see him in action in a couple of days.

Join me after the break as we take a look at who won the trade, and what this signals for the Avalanche organization.

First off, the Avalanche won the trade, hands down. Any time you can get a player with a name like Sgarbossa, you’re the winner. I just hope he comes with his own parrot and wooden leg.

In all seriousness though - while some Sharks fans are likely upset at the loss of McGinn, you have to give some to get some. And I think that if the Sharks can let TJ Galiardi regain his confidence after living in a doghouse for two years, they’ll be happy with the return. Right now, I’d take McGinn over Galiardi any day of the week. He’s having a better year offensively, hits like a truck and might find a place on the second line with the Avs. He should fit the Avalanche system very well. But Galiardi isn’t dogfood either. When he’s at his best, he’s a good skater and an agitating presence on the ice who can chip in some goals. He plays with his heart on his sleeve - if he can get some confidence from the coach.

Daniel Winnik should be a great bottom six player for the Sharks. He’s pretty physical, always on the right side of the puck and covers passing lines well - but it’s also clear that he’s made for the bottom six. There’s no real offensive upside to Winnik and in case of injuries, he’s not the guy you’d want to slot in on the top two lines to cover for the injured players.

So in the short term, if the Sharks can pump Galiardi’s tires a bit (or ask Roberto Luongo to do so), they should win the trade short-term. But I find it interesting that the Avs managed to get Mike Connolly and Michael Sgarbossa in return for Daniel Winnik. They are two pretty good prospects, and I might be more excited about Sgarbossa right now. He’s a late bloomer who went undrafted but is tearing it up in the OHL right now. I hope the Avs have scouted him well though before the trade - big numbers in the OHL doesn’t necessarily mean that the player will put up big numbers in the NHL. What I’d like to see from a player like Sgarbossa is a good work ethic, hockey sense, and a willingness to learn and adapt. If he’s just looking to score he might never prove to be more than a minor league star - but if he’s willing to work and learn the defensive side of the game, he might have a future in the NHL even if he doesn’t pan out as a top line player.

All in all, I think it’s a pretty fair deal short-term. For the Avalanche, the deal depends on how Sgarbossa and Connolly turn out. But I’m looking forward to seeing Jamie McGinn play with the Avs - he fits right in with the new Avalanche system. The team has gone from a large amount of small but skilled players, to a larger (I like to think of it as Maple Leaf-ian) crew that still retains the skills. Landeskog hits everything that gets in his way, Steve Downie is a tough guy, and so is Jamie McGinn. And with a four-game winning streak right now, the Avs look like they at least have a chance at that elusive playoff appearance…

McGinn is not worth an article.

So who gets shipped down? I’m aunsmisg Bourque would be the obvious choice, but who would be the #2? Yip would make the most sense stat-wise, but since they picked him up off waivers, don’t they have to guarantee him an NHL spot? Or would they just risk losing him to waivers again?
