Open Thread: Let’s Chat Deadline Eve, Eh?

JJ’s at the helm of KK Mission Control for a few hours today, so why not jump in here and throw a question/comment or two my way???

We can talk Southeast trade deadline stuff, leaguewide matters or Malkin to the Kings… Whatever you guys like, really. I’m here for the afternoon.

I’ll start it off with something from my neck of the woods for you all to consider:

Just how good is/are this year’s Tampa Bay Lightning?

Discuss…

Who do you see moving from Carolina? I think Samsonov and LaRose may have new homes by tomorrow night? Your opinion?

Amanda, I think you might be on to something…

I definitely see them making an effort, at least, to move one of their forwards on expiring contracts for some help on defense. That includes the names you mentioned and also, though less likely, Erik Cole and Jussi Jokinen.

Crickets…

And FYI, for anyone wondering: no, I have not received a thank you text/email/call from Mike Smith for the reverse psychology in my interview piece with him that clearly led to his recall! smile

Alright, here’s a question: who are your Jack Adams candidates? Is Guy Boucher your top pick?

I’ll add that I think the front runners are Boucher, Tippett, Trotz (always), and Martin.

Thanks, NHLJeff…

It’s hard for me not to sound biased in admitting that, yes, I think Boucher has to be the favorite but I can’t pretend to believe otherwise.

He’s done a phenomenal job from the onset and, though I’ve written it a million times already, the fact that this team hasn’t had a slump all year might be his most impressive feat. These players bought into Guy (and Yzerman as well, if I’m being fair) immediately… And they haven’t wavered for a second since.

Such a smart guy (no pun intended).

If he doesn’t win it this year, he’ll get one soon enough. Mark that down.

I also like what Trotz and Tippett have done…

Tampa’s Power Play, JJ. how do we fix it?

Justin, Good question.

Looked good against Phoenix, but everything did that night…

I think Vinny’s surge of late will help a lot but, since Bergeron’s been around, him having been labeled basically a hired gun, they just look “off”.

It’s a confidence thing at this point so, best thing that can happen is they get a couple fluky scores…

Also, Stammer’s gotta get back to being creative. He’s as good a decoy as he is a weapon.

No love for Bylsma?

Pens are 4th in the East with the second highest point total.  No Staal until January 1st.  Malkin is done for the season.  Crosby has missed 20 games.  Kunitz, Letestu, Asham and Comrie have all missed a significant amount of time.  Jeffrey and Tangradi - their best AHL players - have been injured as well.  Also, Orpik is going to miss up to 4 weeks and Martin has been hurt a few times this season as well.

And they’re 4th in the East with the 2nd highest point total.  In case I hadn’t mentioned it before.  Haha.

Don’t get me wrong, all those guys have done great jobs with their respective clubs, but you gotta give Danny B. some love, too…right?

Flashtastick56… He’s next on my list. The fact that they’re hanging in there with all that’s happened is amazing. Bylsma’s gotta get some love.

Tell you what, swap him with Tippett. I won’t tell.

ok now a serious question and a

Is roloson the real deal?  I have him in my pool and it seems hes a bit up and down.  Shutout one game, then lets in 5 goals.  Is that a byproduct of a team that plays wide open, or am I wrong in this viewpoint?

Also, good to see some discussion on kk.  The format on the site does not seem to encourage discussion for whatever reason and should be looked at, as this is one of the best sites out there.  Food for thought…...

Thanks for the input, tosh.o… Talk to the big guy…

As for Roli, I share similar concerns, having followed him for many years. But, as you may have seen today, when he bears down, he can get the job done for sure.

As long as he doesn’t lose that composure, I think he can be a money goalie. Bolts are banking on as much…

We definitely saw in the ‘06 playoffs how he can carry a team, and he has had some amazing games this season, but I worry that his age may play a factor in such a long haul.  Do you think the Lightning should try to get a solid backup plan tomorrow, or do you think Mike Smith is enough?

NHLJeff, Sorry I missed this yesterday.

Had Smith been claimed on re-entries, I think Yzerman may have been looking to make an upgrade over Curtis McElhinney, who was likely brought in when Ellis was shipped to Anaheim as a safeguard to just that. As it is, McElhinney’s on waivers and will probably head to AHL Norfolk if he clears today, as I suspect he will.

That said, I don’t have any reason to believe the tandem will be anything other than Roli and Smith the rest of the way, barring injury.
