Yzerman Pleased With Givani Smith And Blashill Trying To Make A Point

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Givani Smith has scored two goals in 14 games with the Detroit Red Wings but hasn’t celebrated either, since they came late in one-sided losses.

There will be more goals and many more games for the big, abrasive forward.

Smith has made a good impression since being recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins on Dec. 30. He forechecks hard, grinds down low, plays physical and doesn’t back down.

General manager Steve Yzerman likes what he’s seen, telling people in the organization he’s pleased that Smith goes to the net aggressively.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

A little after noon Tuesday, a pair of goaltenders wanted to know where their Detroit Red Wings teammates were. Practice was supposed to be underway, but the only players on the ice were Jonathan Bernier and Calvin Pickard, who went through skating and shooting drills with goaltending coach Jeff Salajko.

The question came up because they wanted to face shots.

The answer: Detention.

Practice was delayed about half an hour because coach Jeff Blashill was adamant players stick around until they understood the assignment regarding systematic play. The Wings, who lost to the Colorado Avalanche, 6-3, on Monday, take a five-game losing streak into Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Wild.

“It was a meeting that I wasn’t going to leave until we had it straight,” Blashill said after an optional practice at Xcel Energy Center. “We have to get better at our d-zone coverage. So until everybody had a chance to make sure everybody understood, we weren’t leaving that meeting, and if it went a little long, it went a little long.”

The answer: Detention.

Now that’s just good coaching.

Haven’t you’re heard that Blashill is a great development coach?

In other news, Mark Spector of Sportsnet on some moves the Oilers could make…

Acquire a 3C

The gold standard is Pageau, and if Holland could engineer a trade-and-sign, he may change his mind on what he’s willing to send to Ottawa. Assuming Pageau becomes too rich for Edmonton’s blood, think Luke Glendening from Detroit, who has a 56.5 faceoff percentage and leads all Red Wings centremen in shorthanded ice time. He’s 30.

Good job, that’s what he’s supposed to do, coach.

Somehow Smith looks even bigger than his listed
size. He skates in straight lines around the net,
taking the shortest route. If he keeps it up, for the first time in
a while we have a guy who is heavy with enough skill down low to
get the puck back to the slot from behind the net
and give opponents something to worry about in front of it.

He didn’t win but for a rookie he did ok against Deslauriers
who has the most fights in the league and can hurt people.
Credit where due for this pick and for Smith believing in himself
as a pretty young pro even by current standards.

He needs to spend that time figuring out how to run a power play.

Smith is doing what Perlini should be able to do.

Perlini looks slow and tired.  No puck urgency.
My opinion, Perlini needs to drop some weight and find some passion because Smith just took the spot that once was slotted for him.

Now, I think the real worry about this type of meeting is:

Why this type of meeting is being had half way through the season? Even if it’s a new system, shouldn’t this type of meeting happen in November? December at the latest? After one of their many, many losing streaks?

Maybe they had one already?

And if the system is not new….thats just on the players not giving a F.

Why blame Bylsma?  Did you blame Blash when he was the assistant coach with a subpar power play?
Blashill has a history of lousy powerplays at the NHL level.

Why blame Bylsma?

Im sure this is a rhetorical question.

Just in case its not, the dude is the PP coach. I know it all falls under Blashill but Blashill is not the only person that deserves blame. lol.

actually it isn’t.  When Blash was the assistant to Babcock he was in charge of the powerplay.  It sucked then too.  He was shipped out, and Hiller brought in, and lo and behold the wings powerplay greatly improved.
Did we only blame blashill then?  I think mostly babcock took the blame, and he fixed it the nest year. How many years has jeffy had to figure this out?
