WMU Reports Blashill Headed To Hockeytown

Western Michigan head hockey coach Jeff Blashill has resigned his position with Western Michigan University on Friday morning, effective immediately, to take an assistant coaching position with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL.

More from an WMU release...and this quote from Blashill.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity to pursue a lifelong dream to coach in the NHL with the best organization in sports; the Detroit Red Wings.”

Exactly.

Contrast this to Commodore:

This guy was a Red Wing well before he joined the staff this morning.

Congrats to him and to Babcock for having the stones to “take a gamble” by hiring outside the existing clique of coaches.

No question. He grew up a huge Red Wings and Lake State Laker fan (his dad was provost of LSSU for years). He played hockey as a kid, but was smart enough to realize talent alone wouldn’t get him to the NHL, so he made the decision to think and know the game as a coach at a young age.

Obviously it has paid off.

A breath of fresh air is a good thing.
So, which assistant role will he take… the Mullet or the Moustache?

Well, he was a goalie in his playing days. The reason Western had so much success last year is because he instituted a very tight defensive scheme…‘the best offense is a good defense’ frame of thinking.

So I would think Babs would pencil him in on the defensive side of the ledger. But then again, that’s hard to say until we see who the other coach will be.
