Wings/Stars Preview And Notes

12/04/2014 at 9:39am EST

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

The Detroit Red Wings had an off day Wednesday, as their coach thought it would leave players with sharper faculties.

The Wings seek the start of a new winning streak when they host the Dallas Stars tonight. They'll have to do so without top-six forward and power play net-front presence Justin Abdelkader, who remains sidelined by a shoulder injury suffered during Sunday's game.

General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press on Wednesday that Abdelkader "is doubtful for the weekend. We'll see how he feels Saturday morning for final decision. Realistically, we're hoping he's ready to play some time next week."

The Wings host the New York Rangers on Saturday and play at Carolina on Sunday.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

There were signs the last few weeks.

Goals were being scored in bunches, but the Red Wings were allowing quite a few, too.

"The thing I don't like about what's gone on lately is we're giving up too many goals," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said in the midst of that stretch. "I don't mind if we score goals, but I'm not interested in giving them up."

Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Florida was an example of Babcock's words.

STARS (9-11-5) at RED WINGS (14-6-5)

TV: NHLN-US; FS-SW, FS-D

Season series: The Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings split their two-game series in 2013-14. The Red Wings are 108-97-34-5 in 244 regular-season games against the Stars franchise. Detroit center Pavel Datsyuk has 15 goals and 42 points in 38 games against the Stars, and Henrik Zetterberg has 11 goals and 44 points in 32 games. Stars captain Jamie Benn has three goals and 11 points in 14 games against the Red Wings.

Stars team scope: After playing well in three straight victories on home ice, the Stars dropped to 0-2-1 while allowing 15 goals in the past three games. The most recent loss came Tuesday, a 5-3 setback against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre. Right wing Patrick Eaves sustained an ankle injury after blocking a shot during the game and was placed on injured reserve. Dallas coach Lindy Ruff confirmed to the Dallas Morning News after practice on Wednesday that Eaves sustained a broken bone on the play. The coach said Eaves could miss 4-6 weeks. General manager Jim Nill, who placed goaltender Anders Lindback (0-5-0) on waivers Wednesday, recalled forward Curtis McKenzie and goaltender Jussi Rynnas from the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Texas. "We've got to get it in our heads that it has to go straight up the ice, and that's the way to win hockey games," Benn said after the loss to the Maple Leafs. "We've got to simplify our game and play a simple road game and find a way to win."

Red Wings team scope: The Red Wings had their four-game winning streak snapped Tuesday with a 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings were outworked in the loss, something that doesn't happen very often. Zetterberg, who took 11 shots, was disappointed with the effort. "I felt like the power outage was in our brains there for a bit," he told the Detroit Free Press. "We didn't look good. We looked like we didn't want those two points." A power outage in downtown Detroit on Tuesday forced the cancellation of the morning skates for both teams, but electricity was restored in the afternoon and the game began on time. The team did not practice Wednesday. "We were no good, and that includes the coaches, because our team wasn't ready," coach Mike Babcock told the Detroit Free Press. "[Florida] played hard, they were organized, they were structured, they played better than us."
