Why Was Madison Bowey Sent To Grand Rapids?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

The Detroit Red Wings demoted Madison Bowey to send a message.

He was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday after no NHL team claimed him off waivers. Bowey, 24, was described as a “reclamation project” when he joined the Wings last February as part of a trade package, and his lack of growth made him expendable.

“At the end of the day, he had gotten into a spot where he was out of the lineup,” coach Jeff Blashill said Tuesday before the game against the Jets. “It had stagnated a little bit. It was a spot where he had some tough games in a row and so we took him out of the lineup. If he is going to be out of the lineup, he should play hockey.

“This doesn’t need to be the end for him by any means. As I said to him, go down and play like you don’t belong down there. Then people will be pounding on my door to have him come back up. His play will dictate his opportunities.

I know none of them are exactly a solution to the problem but wouldn’t it have made more sense to send down a player like Ericsson or Daley since there wasn’t a chance either would get claimed on waivers? Ericsson and Daley might be better players than Daley but they definitely won’t be with the Wings beyond the end of the season where there is a slight chance Bowey will.

Early on I linked the movie to him, The Turnovers of Madison Bowey.

I think you’d even have to be a certain age to know that movie.

I had absolutely no problem at the time with DET trading Jensen for Bowey, and I still don’t.  Jensen had hit his ceiling, Bowey still had some left in him.  It was a gamble but a small one.  And Jensen has done nothing in WAS to make me miss him.

At this point it seems like Bowey is what he is though.  I think this is less them sending a message to Bowey and more that Yzerman is starting to sort through who is and isn’t worth keeping, and a signal that Bowey probably isn’t sticking around.
