Welcoming Fall With The Sweet Scent Of Vomit

10/13/2016 at 7:20am EDT

Well, here we go. The season we've regretted, the season none of us wanted, the season the MSM and the bloggers, the pharmacists all claim will be "the year", is finally upon us.

I don't think there's ever been a summer with so much discontent or the beginning of a season with so little optimism.

I have no idea what Ken Holland does for a living. Seriously.

Screw it. Time won't stop. The calendar foiled us, crept up on us. Our Season of Contempt begins tonight.

Early season power rankings. USA Today. The emperor posted them yesterday. You can find them if you want. A few teams, like 20, ahead of us: Calgary, Colofuckingrado, Winnipeg.

Arizona.

That right there, the Coyotes, the team that buys a contract to reach the Cap floor, the team that has no business being a team, the team that this league has financially supported like a crack whore cousin in Columbus, is ahead of us in a pre-season ranking.

That is the Holland Referendum.

But, hey, I'm optimistic.

In a weird way, we're ok. In a strange, sadistic, self-abusing, unifying way, we are actually good.

Nobody. Not the elitist Canadien media, not the ignorant American media, not Yahoo, not the bitter little guy on the right who stops pucks and conventional grammar.

Nobody has predicted as little as an 8 seed.

It's not a bad place to be. Actually, it's a shitty place to be compared to like Pittsburgh, or Tampa. I'd like to be in those places. But we're in our place and our place is underrated, undervalued, undermanaged and completely underdefended.

But there are glimmers, shimmies of hope. Reasons to guardedly expect some level of happiness. Potential for offense. Potential in goal. Potential new ideas behind the bench. A final season at the Joe. An Eastern Conference that is wide open except for the top 3 spots.

But it could have been better. Should have been.

It's ok. We understand. Trades are hard. You know what else is hard? Every job every one of us has. It's hard to do your job well. It's hard to support a family. It's hard to get kids ready for school, pay bills, worry and fret. It's hard to work in a state with a depressed economy. It's hard to assemble, to account, to represent, to serve, to create, to work. It's hard.

Trading is hard. Too hard, obviously.

And that's the reason we start our Season of Contempt. Because it's too damn hard for one man to do his job reasonably well.

But we'll stick it out. We'll pay for our Center Ice (how do I get an individual team deal on Directv, is that even offered this year????....someone tell me). We'll go to the Joe. We'll transplant ourselves.

And we actually start with optimism. Because it's all we know, really.

It starts tonight. Live Blog at, oh, I don't know....1800?

LGRW.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
