Ward: Cite Your Source.  Holland: Rebut It or Teach Me Economics

Capgeek says the Detroit Red Wings have 13 million dirty dollars to spend.

Aaron Ward says the Wings are “out of the Shane Doan sweepstakes” because the “asking price is too high.”

The last thing we’ve heard from Ken Holland?

24 July, MLive

“We had a game plan heading into the summer,’’ Holland said. “Part of it was July 1, and we accomplished a lot of things on July 1. We tried to make additional moves. They haven’t happened.
“I still believe we got good depth in goal and good depth up front. The team is younger than it was two years ago. We got a lot of players that can grow into bigger roles.’‘

Your game plan has failed.  July 1st was cosmetic compared to what you guaranteed you’d be doing this summer.  You have a good #1 goalie and an unproven backup.  You have decent depth up front.

And your blue line is mediocre at the very, drunken best.

Here are my demands:  Aaron Ward, give us your sources.  Or at least tell me a Wing official said that.  Because I’d really like to know what “too expensive” is.  8 million is too expensive.  7 is not.  7.5 is negotiable.  3 years is too long, but it’s negotiable. 4 years is a no-go.

Kenny?  If this is pure speculation on Ward’s part, you might want to get out there and say so.  Because this thing is moving fast and you’re looking like absolute garbage.

Yes, PBR is flowing and much more is on tap. Much. More.

Cite your sources, Aaron.  Named or otherwise.  It’s kind of important.

And Kenny? If this is true it’s looking like you’re falling short when money’s the thing (and you have the money to spend, which is…hard to explain away, Kenny…it just is), instead of just the privilege of wearing the Winged Wheel.

It’s looking, Kenny, that you may not be the war-time consigliere we thought you were.  We may have to change your name to Tom Hagen.

I’ll be waiting.  And drinking.

I really don’t want him if it’s gonna be Mike Modano 2.

I read somewhere that Modano said he’s thinking about playing again, since his last season was marred by the hand injury.

I’d love to see the hand-wringing around here if we signed him again LOL

I was never on the “let the kids play” camp, because frankly our kids aren’t good enough yet.

But that’s when we were talking about Parise/Nash/Semin/Doan. If the alternatives are, as George says, Knuble, Hecht or any other old dude, then by all means, throw in the kids.

I don’t think we should be worried about the offense. I mean, it is a problem, but not the biggest one. And the young defenders are nowhere near NHL-level yet. I don’t know, maybe Lashoff has play 5 or 6 games and not be a wreck, but if any of our defenders goes down for too long, we’re screwed.

We’re screwed before any of our defenders go down…

Because holland knows there will be no hockey to start the year.

Cap will go down. Teams at cap will have sell off. Wings pick up very good players at discounted prices.

Wings win cup in 13’ because holland is genius.

True story.

It’s going to air on the lifetime channel early september. It’s going to be quite glorious. Wings fans should watch.

I think part of the problem is “no more Lidstrom” shock.  we all knew it would happen one day.  but we also figured that Holland would be able to do something with the freed up cap space to fill the hole…except he hasn’t.

what the hell ever happened to Mike Commodore?

BTW, in the real life made for television movie filmed in the future I will play datsyuk. Chief plays hank. Holland plays himself (and also god). Anyway, tune it in and watch us act. I’m really good. Chief? Well he was drunk A LOT so his acting wasn’t all that good. Which come to think of it, he did sound like hank so maybe he was acting very well.

Again, can some explain this to me? The cap rollback will be the same as the salary rollback, why would teams have to get rid of players?

And what makes you think get rid of “very good players”, not overpaid 4th-liners?

Conventional wisdom is that a new cap will come with a rollback, so it’s a huge risk to assume that anyone will be selling off at all.  This is a different situation than last time when it went from no cap to a hard cap.

Yep. Eric Staal is going to be available. Maybe Huds will be let go again. That would be great and awesome work.

Kenny’s playing chess while the rest of the league is playing checkers, right?

You haven’t heard?  Kenny is a lazy SOB who is also a moron and should be lynched.

An argument could be made that #5 not only raised his teammates game, but also made the front office look better than they actually are.

Yeah, a source told me so.

Kenny is a…moron

Well, he apparently thought there was a chance in hell that Columbus would ever consider trading Nash to Detroit AND that there was a chance in hell that Nashville might ever consider trading Weber’s rights to Detroit…

I haven’t read every single comment, it’s likely someone already pointed it out.

But Chief, Doan wants a 4 or 5 year deal.  Nobody realistically thinks Doan has 5 years left in the tank.  Whoever signs him at that high a cap hit is going to be carrying that dead cap hit probably 2 or 3 years beyond his playing career, because it’s a 35+ signing.  Forget his declining production, his role even, and all that other stuff… it’s the idea of carrying his $7m/yr cap hit when he’s not even playing.  That’d be an albatross around their necks and in a few years Wings fans would be roasting Holland over the dead cap space they can’t spend.  It’d be viewed much the same way we all laughed at Philly for signing Pronger to that stupid deal that has since backfired..

I can totally get the Semin 1 yr signing and the gnashing of teeth.  For $7m hit for one year, it has potential upside, which is why Carolina and Karamanos did it instead.  I was not a fan and glad to see Kenny restrained, but it wouldn’t have been a catastrophic signing I guess.

Let someone else tie up Doan’s cap hit 2 or 3 years after he retires though.  Let PIT or PHI have to deal with that mess later (can you imagine PHI still having dead cap space on both Pronger and Doan when both aren’t playing?  Oy.)

Commodore went to Yzerman for a conditional 7th round draft pick, and the conditions were ludicrous and not met. Thus, the answer to your question PaulinMiamiBeach is that Holland simply gave away for free the 6’4” defenseman, because apparently someone thought Kindl looked better?

I’m still not panicked. You dont make 20+ consecutive playoff appearances by chance. Let the man work…. And pass the PBR
