Blashill not committing on Svechnikov playing tomorrow tells me a lot about Blashill.

It’s not often the Wings allow a player to be interviewed the day before a game who isn’t going to play.

Blashill just being Blashill I guess.

Blashill also said Larkin, Bertuzzi and Stecher all skated the last few days in Detroit.

After tomorrow’s game. the Wings are off until Tuesday when the host Tampa so maybe all will be recovered by then.

Yup. It says he’s a small man trying to act like a big shot. The sooner he’s gone, the sooner the real Wings rebuild can begin – and that involves the mental side of it for the players as much as anything.

Svechnikov’s screwing up everything for Blash. He’s showed up on the score sheet in 2 of the previous 3 and it’s hard to sit a scorer and maintain any semblance of control of a locker room.

The worst part of it all is the fact Blash isn’t considered on the hot seat right now.

I always find it funny that wings fans get so exercised over stuff like this, especially after Bowman coached here for about a decade and did this stuff and then some, and then some and then some and we LOVED him and know he’s the GOAT of NHL coaches.

It’s kinda tough to be in the hot seat when it’s a foregone conclusion that your contract isn’t likely to be renewed.

Murray, but didn’t they sit Cholowski not allowing him to play in his home town with parents coming? Was it really necessary to pick that exact game?

Remember when Babson benched Modano a 1499 games? Not nearly the milestone but he’s done everything asked of him and it’s silly its TBD.  I find he plays coy often about inconsequential things.  Leaves me scratching my head a bit and comes off as pretentious.

Ok Murray, Jeffy can go coach elsewhere, win six Stanley Cups, and set the record for wins AND then come back and play petty *#$%@& games with the kids.
Until then he is swimming in the deep end, and lost his pool noodle.

This still doesn’t sit well with me. If the kid did something and violated some team rule and the team kept it quiet, then I would not have a problem with what they did. Not sure we’ll ever get the real story until Cholowski’s playing days are over, or Blash is shown the door..

Sevchnikov should play Thursday not because it’s a nice story, but because he’s the more qualified player to help the team, which he is when your alternatives are Nielsen, Filpulla…etc.

Also, as an aside to M.Chadwick from above. I remember quite clearly Scotty Bowman being booed, quite long & loudly early in his tenure when word leaked out he was trying to move Yzerman to Ottawa. So, yes Scotty played head games and was a dick to , what I assume was quite a few players over his time coaching. I guess winning 10? Stanley Cups buys you a little selective memory….

——I think he could have just answered that Svech will play because he has been playing really well since he was called up and it has nothing to do with playing against his brother

This is Not the first time he put those two in the same sentence regarding a similar circumstance..  But i get his point . Just not the proper comparison.

The difference is Bowman’s tactics produced winning teams. Hell, Homer may have never been the player he was if Bowman hadn’t made the comment about his number that first year.

Blashill’s mind games haven’t produced anything but bad feelings, probably because they’re often just petty and unnecessary – like the Cholowski deal. Hopefully, thirty-one games from now we can all wish him well as he walks out from behind the bench for the last time.

I will say this hear and now. I do not think Blashill is a bad coach. I actually think he could be quite good if he would allow himself to trust his own thoughts and instincts then reading from the script of coaches past. He tries too hard to be The Coach instead of being Jeff Blashill. He takes all these absurd training seminars and coaching think tanks and ostracizes himself by his book learned voice. Just my opinion.

he’s a bad coach. he makes nonsense lineup and in-game decisions routinely. the cholowski and now these svech mind games are just unnecessary distractions that are more likely to backfire and hurt morale with young players on a losing team. he’s incompetent.

No I’m not comparing Blashill to Bowman, come on, simply used an analogy to call strikes strikes and balls balls, and in this case BS BS. If we are not willing to criticize the guy we like doing it, we shouldn’t criticize the same from a guy we don’t, like we do in politics.

Forcing players to earn everything, nothing given, pushing buttons, and just in general being a curmudgeonly prick are traits that make most of the good coaches in sports have at the pro level.  Pro Coaches can maybe get away with the mr. friendly guy routine with a very talented veteran laden team that is both driven and talented enough on their own, or sometimes after a team moves on from a real overbearing guy, but in general coaches that make talent better, have that standoffish heavier handed approach, where everything is earned.

All of this said, I really hope Schevy plays, I think he deserves it, and I would bet that he’s going to push himself real hard to have a great practice to ensure he gets that chance, and that could translate into good games and steam roll.

As far as the Cholo situation, this isn’t Timbits, this is the pros.  The kid is not on the team, and everyone has all but said its his play in the D Zone and approach as a pro.  I doubt Yzerman would let Blashsill willy nilly hold talent back.  That very well could’ve been a clear message sent if the kid was not doing what he needed to do leading up to the game. Hey hotshot your not here yet, your still earning this, let this motivate you, and he hasn’t, but we don’t know.

The difference is Bowman’s tactics produced winning teams.
Posted by OlderThanChelios from Grand Rapids, MI on 03/03/21 at 07:21 PM ET

Maybe that, or maybe it was also that Bowman was good enough to choose the teams he wanted to coach, like a team that was filled with Hall of Famers and already winning,  while this is Blashill’s first job not many wanted,  and he took over a team shedding down to a rebuild with little to no talent.

I’ll repeat so I’m not later excused of being some Blashill fan, he’s an ok coach working with ok? talent, and he should not be on our bench next year, a new voice is needed.

Bowman had way better teams, yes, but was also a way better coach. he wouldn’t put his 4th line out after a TV time out in the O zone while down two goals; blash has done boneheaded stuff like this routinely. i also can’t imagine why he’s still playing any of fil, nielsen, or even helm most nights. why not play prospects who might not be good over vets we know are washed? we’re losing most nights anyway. makes no sense.

I think you need to go back and watch the back to back DRWs runs to see how much and when he utilized his 4th line, the original “grind line”.  I was pretty surprised myself watching the broadcast replays of the runs over covid.

As far as kids over prospects, that’s not a Blashil only question, Yzerman certainly controls that, Yzerman, he signed/brought in 4 washed up vets to push those kids down to GR.

The Wings are circling the drain.  They’re not going anywhere.  That being said, why would you sit Svechnikov?  The only way this would make any sense is if he wasn’t producing.  Well guess what?  He is.

Holy crap, of course he’s not going to say who is or isn’t playing in a game that’s not for another 28 hours.
