from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of NHL.com,

Jeff Blashill remains coach of the Detroit Red Wings.

“I have no plans on making a coaching change at this time,” general manager Steve Yzerman said Wednesday….

Yzerman, who became the Red Wings GM on April 19, 2019, said he did not expect to compete for a playoff spot this season. He echoed comments he made Feb. 24 after Detroit sent forward Andreas Athanasiou and defenseman Mike Green to the Edmonton Oilers in separate trades.

“I think Jeff has done a good job,” Yzerman said. “I think it’s been a difficult position. In his tenure here, the Red Wings [have been] in a rebuild. … For the last two, three [NHL] Trade Deadlines, the team has traded valuable players for future assets, and Jeff has, with his head held high, diligently worked hard, done a good job in coaching this team in a difficult situation throughout that.

“As I said in February, I think it’s unfair to judge him based on our record at this time, and quite frankly, we need to improve the team for anybody to truly critique or assess the coaching staff. We need to improve the team.”

Yzerman said he had not spoken to Blashill about his future. Blashill is scheduled to speak to the media Thursday.

“He’s the head coach of the team,” Yzerman said. “I’m sure he heard my comments in February. We’ve talked about our team. We’ve talked very openly about our plan, what we’re trying do, where we’re at presently, where we’re going, and we intend to here discuss our team moving forward.”

Dana Wakiji of the Wings website,

While the NHL announced its plan to finish the season and crown a winner, other leagues canceled the rest of their regular season and the playoffs, including the American Hockey League.

It was certainly a blow for the Wings, who had several top prospects looking forward to a long playoff run with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Detroit’s 2015 first-round pick, forward Evgeny Svechnikov, 2016 first-round pick, defenseman Dennis Cholowski, 2017 first-round pick, forward Michael Rasmussen, 2018 first-round pick, forward Joe Veleno, and 2019 first-round pick, defenseman Moritz Seider, were all looking forward to playing big roles on the team.

Forward Filip Zadina was injured when he was with the Wings so he wouldn’t have been eligible had the Griffins been in the playoffs.

“Everybody wanted to finish the season and our younger players, we were hoping they were in a good playoff race in Grand Rapids,” Yzerman said. “They weren’t in at the time but we thought they would benefit from the stretch drive. We thought getting into the playoffs would be a great thing for them. For everybody, not playing isn’t a good thing. I don’t see any positive in not playing as far as your development in your career at any stage. But there’s nothing we can do about it and we’ll work our way around it and we’ll figure out through the offseason here how we best prepare for coming out of this.”

“Yzerman Confirms the “Rebuilding” is Really a Remodel”

“I have no plans on making a coaching change at this time,” general manager Steve Yzerman said Wednesday….

Blashill will lead the group in improving the rest rooms and painting the locker room. Expected to take 5-7 years.

<sigh>

Well, not sure if Blasshill will be with the team at the draft.  My take is he will be gone, Yzerman is not playing his cards just for the media, he will wait for the appropriate time. Who knows?  the other day I heard a prominent sports caster saying the SC won’t be presented until late October early November.  We will see how much summer playoff hockey is popular!

Yzerman sure is talking a lot about keeping Blashill. He’s almost defensive about it.

Saw that coming.  The organization is in love with this guy to the point that their judgment is impaired.
My apathy grows.

If that’s the case I’m sure Yzerman will have an easy time finding a new coach who is cool with working for a GM that openly lies directly to his head coach’s face.

It takes some people a long time to find their calling…

Yzerman has 5 years to turn the ship in the right direction, he’s used one already so 2025 the Red Wings should be top three in the DIVISION if it exists in 5 years!
