Biega is 31, 5’10” 198lbs.

via Elite prospects,

A diminutive, stocky two-way D-man that makes very good decisions with and without the puck. Very physical and plays a hard-nosed brand of hockey. Positionally sound and has great awareness on the ice. Excellent shot. Not creative by any means, nor can he be relied upon for consistent offence. Still a hard-working player who takes nothing for granted and does all of the little things right.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today acquired defenseman Alex Biega from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for left wing David Pope.

Biega, 31, has appeared in 179 NHL games with the Canucks since debuting in 2014-15, totaling 36 points (4-32-36) and 94 penalty minutes. A 5-foot-10, 199-pound blueliner from Montreal, Quebec, Biega posted his best statistical season with Vancouver in 2018-19, registering a career-high 16 points (2-14-16) to rank fourth among Canucks defensemen in points, despite skating in only 41 games. Biega has also logged 351 games in the American Hockey League with the Portland Pirates, Rochester Americans and Utica Comets over his 10 professional seasons, registering 115 points (20-95-115), a plus-16 rating and 245 penalty minutes.

Prior to his professional career, Biega spent four seasons at Harvard University, serving as captain in 2009-10. He recorded 70 points (15-55-70) in 131 collegiate games from 2006-10. He was twice named to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Third All-Star Team and was an ECAC All-Rookie Team member as a freshman in 2006-07. Biega is originally a fifth-round draft pick (147th overall) of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Biega’s well-liked in Van - great team-mate, never quits, always trying to improve some aspect of his game. If nothing else he’ll be a great mentor in Grand Rapids, but I hope he gets some games in with the Wings.

The move is a curious one.  There’s not much to lament about the loss of Pope I guess, but I’m not sure where Biega fits into things in DET’s org chart.  He’s 31, there’s no more upside to his game, and he sure seems like a career AHLer.

The only thing I can figure is that it’s a prelude to something else, like DET’s going to need more than one of Hicketts, Kaski, Seider, or Lindstrom up sooner rather than later, and so Biega would fill in nicely for AHL side of things.  But for that to happen, you have to imagine DET having a lot of d-men down with injury, or some NHL d-men being moved out, for there to be room.

With Errorson still out and now Daley’s injured (again) were down to 6 D on the big club, assuming Bowey will be taking his spot now. Looks like just an insurance move. Id like to see Hicketts or Kaski called up over this Biega guy but we’ll see

16 pts in 41 games last year with Van. With numbers like that he a top 3 D in Detroit

I’m hoping he was brought over just to fill in the role as the 7th D-man while E and Daley are out. Don’t want any of those 4 not playing. Not sure why Lashoff or McIlrath couldn’t also fill the role, though. Maybe they don’t want to break up the leadership group in GR.

Yeah I should have added that part.  McIlrath in particular they seem to keep wanting to give NHL shots to (which I don’t understand).  Seems weird not to want to break up GR blueline leadership/vets though only 1 game into their season.  Like, you have up 5 goals last game… what are you afraid of messing up?

Everyone needs to listen to that Yzerman interview.  Especially the last two minutes of it.

That was a fun game to watch - there weren’t many of those last year.  The Wings are in a playoff spot - going to enjoy it while I can!

The wings are likely going to need someone to come up with the club, and sit in our press box as an emergency 7th dman, while the kids who have long term promise on this team play and develop in Grand Rapids.  So welcome to the team Biega.

Lashoff is not an NHL dman, he’s just not, Biega is fringe but at least you could argue he belongs. I would think the team would want McIlrath to be patrolling the ice for GR with the amount of valuable talent we have down there.
