Tick Tock: After 85 minutes, “We Like Our Team”

Hi. Good morning. I think this is going really well. You?

Jim Nill's having a nice day. He used to work for the Wings.

Steve Yzerman's having a good week. He used to be a Wing.

Pittsburgh's having a decent day. We don't like them much.

And Kenny?

Jack Squat.

Boyle certainly turned down a deal with Detroit to sign with NYR.

Ehrhoff? That's a nifty little ditty. We undoubtedly offered three at at least 5/per. He goes to Rosby and new GM, Don Rickles, for 1 year and 4?

I know. I'm sure we'll get Niskanen. I'm sure everything will be just fine. All is well.

Or it could be another summer of suck, the same summer of suck since Hossa said seeya and slunk off to Chicago.

Live Blog? Sure. Might as well drink a little.

Personally I’m kind of missing where Detroit has missed out.  Really wasn’t a whole lot of worthwhile talent out there and the majority of it has gone at pretty expensive prices.

In Holland’s defense as he compares to Stevie Y., Yzerman is mostly looking good this week in the sense that he’s cleaning up from some messes he made for himself. So I wouldn’t look at Yzerman’s week too favorably.

Nill on the other hand. Yowza. What a day. They just put together a corps of centermen that can compete with the tops in the West. Hard to say they are near the tops but certainly they can now play competitively with the Kings, Ducks, Hawks, Sharks (assuming they don’t blow it up)...

Actually, I think it’s worse than that. For some reason, players seem to be avoiding Detroit – even if they can get more money and term there. Maybe they look at the line-up (including the goaltender) and see too many question marks.

I mean, come on, Erhoff chooses the Pens (who have a total unknown quantity for their head coach) instead of the Wings (with supposedly the best head coach and GM in the NHL). Or maybe, just maybe, they don’t want to sign with a team that’s dumb enough to give another contract to Dan Cleary.

Personally I’m kind of missing where Detroit has missed out.

They missed out in that they neeeeeeeeeeeed to improve their defense and there were a half dozen UFAs who absolutely would improve their defense.  And if they don’t get anyone, their defense will be worse than it was this year, and it wasn’t all that good this year.

Not sure how you can miss that…

Following up on the point I made above, this says it all…

From Kahn: Wings have been told Niskanen going elsewhere.

From St. James: Checked with UFA D Anton Stralman’s agent, Marc Levine, if interested in #RedWings? One-word answer: “No.” #tothepoint

This might be one of the most embarrassing days in Red Wings FA Day history.

The only thing that would make it worse is if the Wings offer Quincey 4 years @ $5M each and he chooses to go to the Islanders for 4 years @ $3.5M each.  confused

I see a good chance they don’t re-sign Kyle Quincey, so that’s actually an improvement on the blue line.  Because he’s hot garbage.

It’s ok.  It really is guys.

If Kenny doesn’t spend the money right now, they can have the cap room later when a situation turns sour with a Weber, or Phaneuf, or Suter or something… or maybe when NYR have to cut free a Staal, McDonagh, or Girardi.  It’s not just completely over.

And the Wings did not sign Brooks Orpik to 5x5.  They did not panic-sign Stephane Robidas, with two broken legs, to 3 years (!!!).  They did not sign Dany Heatley Part Two (aka Thomas Vanek) to $6.5m per.

Both Babcock and Holland have said their primary objective was to get an offensive-minded, right-handed PMD to shore up the top four pairings.  It was reiterated over and over again, but just on the first day alone, they couldn’t even get left-handed PMDs to sign.

Right now, it’s really looking like we will have the same basic lineup defensively (minus Q, thankfully, but it’s Holland and I wouldn’t put it past him to re-sign Q because his pickings are now next to nothing) as last year.

I truly hope Van Zant and his crew are properly prepared for injuries this season after last season’s ridiculous IR list.

I am glad we did not sign Niskanen, he is not that good, and will be way over paid.  I still want us to sign Steve Downie.  Maybe take a look at MDZ, he is better than Kindl.  And again for comedic interests, sign Heatly.

Honestly?

I took it that he really did want that term, wasn’t getting it from anyone, quickly changed tacts, and took 1 yr to try and get paid NEXT year instead…

FA is about two things: 1) Players cashing in to make more money than they are likely worth, and 2) Teams filling a desperate need the fastest way possible.

FA is a bidding war, so of course players will get more. The Wings desperately needed help on D yesterday. At close of business today, they still do. But hey, they still have a ton of room under the cap!  mad

Where will defensive help for the 2014-2015 season come from? Not from FA. So who is Kenny going to trade for?

G reporting that the Wings did offer some very competitive term and money for the guys they really wanted.  See the Khan and Regner tweets in G’s post and then compare what those guys signed for everywhere else.
