Thursday Digging: The Bloggers

Memo to all A2Y readers: the Hasek club car has been hosed, fumigated and refurbished.  It is now, once again, open for your patronage.  The Stress Train itself won’t leave the station until mid-day tomorrow, but I understand many of you have become homeless since Games 4 and 5 against Dallas.  I feel ya.  Establish residency for as long as domestic situations require you to do so.

While you’re getting settled, let’s find out what some of the bloggers are saying.  First, because I know you like to be shocked in the morning, here’s a compilation of “expert” picks brought to you by the hard workers at Face Off Factor (graphic stolen from Pensblog).

Nifty, eh?  When this is said and done I’ll craft an email we can all send to the “pundits” who have caved to Little Gary’s fantasies and picked against the Wings (in some cases, 4 series’ in a row).

Not yet though.  Not yet.  Hate to sound “arrogant” or give the impression that I feel we are “owed the Stanley Cup.”  It seems that a few folk down south are hoping for our demise.  I’ll let Acid Queen’s latest headline speak for every roadkill chef south of, well, Detroit.

Wow.  Depressing stuff.  No idea what she’s referring to. You?

For the most part, the blogging world is pretty pumped about this series.  You’ve read the “best matchup since ‘94” lines (better, in my opinion…considering this Final doesn’t include the most overrated captain in hockey history).  So have I.  If I was an NHL-general fan (do those still exist?), I’d watch this sucker.  All 6 games of it.  And they’ll be watching up in Canada. Guaranteed.

I know this will drive the Caniacs, amongst others, nuts but I, for one, am excited to have a Final between two (two!?!) non Bettman clubs for the first time in years. No clubs from California or the southern U.S. No clubs that have moved from hockey hotbeds to hockey wastelands. No clubs where the fanbase consists of a total of 25000 terrific, passionate, knowledgeable fans but not a single person more.

As many of you know, I live in the nation’s capital (ol).  I live amongst Cap bloggers and you guys know by now that I respect them, mainly because they don’t tell me they hate the Wings when I drink with them. Well, they tell me, but a few of them are pretty big dudes so I let it slide.  Plus, there’s always ‘98.  Anyway, check this out.  You know the Cap fans dislike them some fowl.  I guess it’s documented.

Hence, the dilemma of Gustafsson…who’s got a part time gig (yep, I said “gig” and I’m 39. Deal with it.) as a professional voice.  A few days ago, he was offered a chance to record the following:

Why couldn’t the audition script have 2 different words — Detroit and “Red Wings” instead of Pittsburgh and Penguins?

Great question.  I’ll answer it for you in three words, and I think you know that they are:  Thanks Gary. Ass.

Moving on.  Moving on.

Matt at The Battle of Alberta believes the Detroit Red Wings will win the Stanley Cup this year, which makes him a genius.  He also believes the storyline running rampant amongst the MSM—that Gary’s Baby Boy is desitined to Win a Cup soon, if not this year—may not be the lock many believe it to be.

Guaranteed? Pffft. “A lock” and “a sure thing” are way, way overstating it. And I’m not making a semantic argument here either; I’m simply pointing out the fact that “the Penguins should be a good team for quite a while” is a major step, or steps, short of “they will definitely win a Stanley Cup”. Their best chance to win is right now.

This is a tough league. There are 25 or so teams that are desperate to be the best, stocked with players who want to be the best. Several of them are going to get a lot better—who knows which ones—and I don’t find it that easy to predict that the Penguins will keep getting better.

Matt also mentions the Hossa deadline deal, a trade that sealed the East.  This year.  Not next, or the year after. Somebody in black and gold needs to get paid. And paid soon.  In other words, the team we’ll see Saturday isn’t going to be around forever.  There’s no guarantee it will be the same team next October.  We, Wing fans, know that better than most.  There is no doubt that the Pens are going to compete, and be considered favorites, for years to come.  But the idea that it “will happen eventually”?  Well…“eventually” meant 14 years for Steve Yzerman.  Will Crosby be in Pittsburgh that long?  Better question. Will Malkin?

Hey.  Seen the Finals’ officials yet?  Sure you have.  In case you didn’t care enough to look, Mirtle’s got ‘em.

Referees: Paul Devorski (147); Brad Watson (91); Dan O’Halloran (59); Marc Joannette (52).

Linesmen: Jean Morin (134); Jay Sharrers (113); Shane Heyer (97); Pierre Racicot (83).

The big surprise is no Bill McCreary, who had refereed the finals from 1994 to 2007.

Yep, no McCreary’s going to be strange.  As for a surprise?  I’m surprised Kelly Sutherland wasn’t rewarded by Little Gary.  I’m surprised Sutherland wasn’t given the title of CEO and President/Supreme Ruler of all NHL Officials for his piece of trash, pre-meditated, anti-Homer, pro-Bettman, no-reach-around, prison laundry when the guards aren’t looking call in Game 4.

Oh, and if you think that didn’t have an effect?  Try 120 more minutes of physical and mental strain.  Minutes that could have saved some wear and tear on Zetterberg, Chelios, Drake and Homer.  Minutes that would have prevented Lidstrom from being run in Game 6.  Another four days for Filppula to rest his knee and every Wing to rest whatever the hell is ailing them.  Datsyuk’s goal wins that series in 4.

So, yeah, I guess I’m surprised Sutherland’s not Finals bound.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
