The Day After The Big Day Will Be A Bigger Day, Or It Could Be Tomorrow

I slept well. Thank you for asking me.  And I woke up content. Well, not content…but I did wake up optimistic.  Nick Cotsonika (@cotsonika) ripped us pretty good yesterday. He said we were spoiled, that Kenny Holland deserves the “benefit of the doubt”, that we should give him the credit he deserves for ‘08, for simply getting to Game 7 in ‘09 and even for making offers to Suter and Parise.  In turn, I called him an elitist MSM and Ken Holland’s BFF, which I think is frowned upon in both GM and reporter circles.

Cotsonika may have been right. We (I) may have been tough on Holland yesterday, especially when you consider how much work remains today and the rest of the summer.

I just don’t like the mainstream media shaking their heads at us and scolding fans for having opinions.  You’re not the boss of me, Nick.

And, don’t forget, Cotsonika covered the Wings as a Digger for the Freep from ‘99 to ‘05.  He knows “spoiled” Wing fans when he sees them, eh?  Well, that’s nice.  I know a thing or two about Diggers and how hard they pushed back when Scott Bowman had the reigns in Hockeytown. In other words, not at all. That whole “protect the organization” stance is ingrained in the Wing beat writers and, obviously, Cotsonika hasn’t lost that instinct.

So, tell me I’m spoiled and chide me for not giving Holland his precious “benefit”, but do it from a bar stool and not your vaunted Yahoo ivory tower but only in 140 characters or less.

As fired up as I still am about a journalist reprimanding me for having an opinion, I’ve softened a bit on Tootoo.  And before we get into this, no…my criticism of this deal has nothing to do with the guy’s personal life. It has everything to do with how he’s conducted himself on the ice, against the Wings, and it probably has a lot more to do with those pathetic whistles.

But those won’t be a problem in Detroit, will they? No, I don’t think so.

Tootoo will not score. He will run people. He’ll “hunt” as our Uncle Mike likes to say.  We like that too.  He can hunt with Helm.  He’ll make people nervous, us included.  If he’s not dealt, and I don’t think he will be, I think we might be looking at a player who becomes very popular very soon.  I do trust Ken Holland and my Uncle Mike on this one.  I do not like Jordin Tootoo. Not one bit, but I can get there.  Plus—and this according to some well-crafted commentary at Dirk Hoag’s blog—he signed for less than what Nashville offered him to stay there.  That’s just funny.

Bubba’s getting seriously angsty.  Tootoo to the Wings.  Suter?  All twenty fans will completely melt down if we get both.

The number being thrown out there for Suter is 90 million over 12.  George talked about it late last night and you’ve already read it so I’m not going to the effort to cut and paste.  Here’s what I’ll tell you…I don’t care.  It’s Monopoly money at this point.  If it gets us Suter, the smart kids will do what they have to in order to get us under the Cap in time to start the season whenever it is that Little Gary lets us have a season.

And I reacted to the reports yesterday that Parise is a lock to the Pens.  Maybe he is, but I’m not as convinced this morning. Yesterday I was positive he’d be right next to Rosby for the next ten.  I still believe that’s likely, but I have a glimmer of hope he could end up here or anywhere but Pittsburgh.  I’m curious about this: how excited is Parise about playing with the Pens when/if their “captain” goes down hard (again) and he’s left with the task of stroking Malkin’s ego, constantly reminding the malcontent that he’s the guy and that Parise’s just happy to be next to the guy who’s the guy whenever the real guy is hurt.

Ken Holland’s done some strange things the last two weeks. Brunner, all these excess parts, the public declaration for Schultz.  All coinciding with a real need for improvement and a real opportunity to make it big-time in Suter and Parise.  I’m not sold on giving him Cotsonika’s precious “benefit” but I’m starting to get a feeling there are plans in place that I’ll never be smart enough to understand.  Somebody’s being sneaky and I absolutely dig that.

Today’s the day, Kenny.  Make me feel dirty for doubting you.

3.) This is the second time Hudler has chosen a bigger payday over his teammates.  Thats his right of course, but thats also un-Red Wing-like.  I’m not gonna lose a wink over him walking.

Well, Wings were not gonna play ball with his agent’s demand for $4 million a year for three years.  I think I read the Wings offered $3.25 million/year for three years…up from $2.875 million on his last check.

Sammy has intangibles Happy didn’t. Sammy can defend to an extent, Sammy has a mouth, as does Happy, but when Sammy opens his, opposing team members get pissed. When Happy opens his, only pimps get pissed.

Det not having helm and nashville having tootoo was a big reason why the wings took a first round exit now we have both I’ll take it for now kennny

You may not be a moron, rather just write like one.

Tootoo played in one game versus the Wings in the playoffs, six minutes.  THAT is your idea of a big reason that put Nashville over the top?

Dude you can’t BS fans on this blog.  Go back to mlive.

I probably did speak too fast there.  I’m not sure what Kenny offered him or if he did at all, but Kenny said Jiri was going to pursue free agency.  To me that says Jiri thinks he can get a bigger payday elsewhere, and he is probably right.  He wasn’t going to get a pay raise by sticking around.

1) No no, I get what you’re saying… I love the little guy, and there were quite a few times last season where I just shook my head and said, “Gotta shoot that puck, Jiri.”

2) As far as Sammy vs. Hudler goes, they’re different players; Sammy is a North-South, shoot at all costs, grinding type, whereas Hudler is an East-West, slick passing, try-to-make-the-best-play-possilbe guy. They actually compliment each other well on a line together (along with Flip), as was evidenced by the 2008 season.

3) If he takes more money to go play somewhere else with a coach who doesn’t hate (yeah, that’s hyperbole, but whatever) him, can you blame the guy? Sure he went to Russia for bank, but he came back to honor his Detroit contract after playing out half of his KHL contract. Will I be “devastated” when he signs somewhere else? Not hardly; however, I will be slightly disappointed…

... maybe I’ll take up Tootoo’s cause next. wink

It’s the energy that tootoo brings that makes him valuable like helm.  We have pussies on our team but when franzen Bert ericson see guys half their size knocking opponents to the ice it gives them inspiration to at least try to hit.  Don’t insult me please

“I watch, I wait and then I criticize after the fact.”  To me, the worst thing about today’s fans is that they seem to think this is fantasy hockey or NHL 12 or some such sh*t.  Many, many variables go into building a team.  Most of us would have an aneurysm trying to do what Tick -Tock does for a living.  Instead of the wailing and gnashing of teeth, let’s let things unfold a bit before calling for people’s heads or declaring next season a failure based on perceived actions or lack thereof.  I love this place but sometimes I get a headache reading some of the posts.

Reading through the threads on Tootoo’s signing is like watching the Kubler-Ross Stages of Grief in action. I didn’t care for the signing when I first heard about it, but I hated Chelios when he was traded to the Wings and loved him after a couple years, so I may be able to appreciate this douchebag in time. But if those goddamn whistles make their presence at the Joe I reserve the right to irrationally hate him for it.

I don’t know what to think about Tootoo. My first reaction was “Oh gawd not that dirty douchebag blockhead. Kenny finally gave up on building a team that plays the game the right way; we’re now no different than the ucks or yotes.” My second reaction was “Is this guy Bill Laimbeer on skates?” I’m so confused.

Plus——he signed for less than what Nashville offered him to stay there

Chief, according to George, Bubba did not offer to resign him.

On being told by Nashville that they weren’t going to re-sign him: “At the end of the day, we’re here to play hockey. I think every hockey player can relate to that when you told you’re not going to be in the lineup, it kind of stings you.

I’ll admit that Tootoo’s comments as he was leaving Bubba were all class. But now I read that TooToo was a cast off? The Wings signed a Bubba reject? That is just all wrong.

Seriously, a Preds cast off who didn’t even dress for 7 of 10 playoff games!  We’re that much worse than Nashville now.

Wrong way to look at it I know.  Like I said earlier, he’s ours now so I’m all in, and we need some of what he can bring.

Now, I am not anywhere as enthused aboot Tootoo, but, Babbles now has his vaginal sandpaper he’s been bitching aboot for a couple of seasons. I hope he is happy with the signing and can get the best out of Tootoo. I am still not on board with the signing, but what do I know?

I know it will take a Cup for that to happen.

Haven’t softened on Tootoo one bit.  He’s garbage, and a point of shame.  How many bad penalties and distractions does this team need?  Nice to see Holland addressing scoring and special teams.

My two cents:

Everyone’s general response to the Samuelson resigning has me a little confused. Sure he was prone to fire some pucks wide on the point but in my mind hes a definite upgrade from happy.A better shot, a right handed shot at that. An actual desire to play for the winged wheel, which lets face it happy has never really had. Plus he comes in at a great price for the upside he brings. He’s a piece that makes the forward lineup more versatile and dangerous, all the Sammy haters and the Sammy “Meh” folk can suck my @#*&.

As for Tootoo. The fact is Ive wanted another Darren Mccarty on this team since we lost Darren Mccarty. The question is can Tootoo bring that type of game? The more I think on it the more the answer becomes probably not. He can agitate, but like many have pointed out he’s not a bruiser. He can fore check, but he isn’t a legitimate scoring threat. But what he definitely is, is a player who can improve a team with his fire and desire to compete(just like Mccarty) and be improved be the players and people he plays around. This signing has potential plus now someone can install a steam whistle on the Hasek. That’ll be just the thing to wake us from our sweat-soaked nightmare filled dreams and remind us that the booze car is open 24/7.
