Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press answered a few questions from the fans like this on what has clicked with the Wings...
Getting healthier helped. The Wings began the season with four rookies on the blue line, and that would take a toll on any team. Look at the impact veteran defenseman Mike Green has had since Oct. 26 — they were 12-6-2 with him in the lineup entering Saturday’s game. He had 16 points after 20 games, leading all team defensemen.
Coach Jeff Blashill often talks about the importance of feeling confident — the Wings gave themselves a booster shot when they beat Dallas Oct. 28, and then followed up with victories against Columbus and New Jersey. That injected confidence into the lineup, which in turn led to more victories. As Dylan Larkin put it, the Wings stopped sagging on the bench when an opponent scored, stopped signaling defeat with their body language. They were up 3-0 in Columbus and didn’t get rattled when the Blue Jackets tied the game, instead finding a way to score two more goals and win. Now, they really look like they are building an identity of playing for one another and standing up for one another. Last season after 29 games they were 11-13-5 with 27 points; this season they were 13-12-4 with 30 points, but to me, they look like a much more cohesive team this season, they play with much more conviction.
