The Search For A Coach

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The list of potential coaching candidates for the Detroit Red Wings is long, including familiar faces who have had success with multiple NHL teams, some with a Stanley Cup championship on their resume.

Or maybe general manager Steve Yzerman will hire an up-and-coming NHL assistant coach, an AHL head coach ready for the next level, or a promising college or major junior coach....

If there is a most-compelling candidate, it’s Barry Trotz, the long-time Nashville coach who won a Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018 and was fired by the New York Islanders two weeks ago.

But Trotz has several options, including Vegas, Dallas, Winnipeg, Chicago and Philadelphia, other teams with coaching vacancies. Trotz, who turns 60 in July, has one year remaining on his contract with the Islanders at $4 million and might opt to take a year off and return in 2023-24, when there will be other, possibly more desirable destinations.

The same could apply to former Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, 59, the other high-profile coaching free agent who has one year remaining on his contract with Toronto at $5 million.

Wherever Trotz and Babcock go, it’s probably not going to be for a short-term deal at a team-friendly price.

The list of available names includes many others with NHL experience: Pete DeBoer, Paul Maurice, John Tortorella, Joel Quenneville, Claude Julien, Dave Tippet, Alain Vigneault, Rick Tocchet, Kirk Muller and Jim Montgomery.

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

Under normal circumstances, a Detroit Red Wings prospect leaving North America to return to play in Europe would be seen as the end of the story in terms of the potential for playing in the NHL.

In the case of Antti Tuomisto, the exact opposite is true.

The Finnish defenseman is opting to forego his junior and senior NCAA seasons with the Denver Pioneers and is returning to his homeland. Tuomisto and TPS of the SM-liiga, Finland’s top division, have agreed to terms on a contract for next season.

The Red Wings, however, maintain Tuomisto’s NHL rights. Selected 35th overall in the 2019 NHL entry draft – Steve Yzerman’s first draft as Detroit GM – Tuomisto is still intent of earning a spot with the Red Wings in his future hockey plans. He remains unsigned in terms of an NHL deal, however.

Unless Florida ownership is a dumb as their players for partying at the strip club the night before Game 4, Florida should be shopping for a head coach too, and that team would be a good fit for Trotz, they already have the offensive firepower and goaltending, they just need a coach who can get them to play defense first hockey that leads to offense.

Babcock would be a good option there too.

Here’s more on the Panthers and a strip club visit.

Most main stream media sites have stayed away.

Besides Trotz, Ansars list of coaches a big F&#K NO.  Babs and Q should never get another NHL job, and the rest are actually probably worse than Blashill.

Again, Trotz is the only retread I’m interested in.

And I would be happy to see Babdick and Quenneville disappear.

Yzerman has experience with Claude Julien on the Men’s Canadian National Teams.  I would think he’d give Julien serious consideration in addition to Trotz.  Having said that, Trotz will go to a Cup contender so I’m looking at FLA, VGK, DAL, and probably, WPG, but he ain’t coming to DET.

To reiterate:  absolutely NO to Babblecock and Queenville.

What? After a stellar 12-15-27 output in just 33 games last season with the Berlin Polar Bears? Come on, man, say it ain’t so.  LOL

I would have liked Lane Lambert and Kirk Muller might be my favorite on that list, but that might be my hometown Milwaukee Admirals bias

(No disrespect to Trotz, maybe if the roster was a little closer to contending)
