The Game Plan For Tonight

from Dana Wakiji of DetroitRedWings.com,

"One is we want to make sure we support the puck, that we want the puck, that we're able to have the puck out of our zone through the neutral zone so that we can play in the offensive zone more," Wings coach Jeff Blashill said after the team's optional morning skate Tuesday. "We had a number of really, really good chances last game. But we didn't have lots of sustained O-zone time. So if we can get more sustained O-zone time you're going to have a chance to score more of the dirty-type goals we have to.

"We have to get to the net a little more and try to score some of those dirty-type goals. We're not going to get better looks necessarily from our best players than we got last game. We had a number of looks with wide-open shots in the slot. If you get those every night, you're going to score for sure, but those are hard to come by every night, so let's make sure the nights we're not getting those we're still scoring dirty-type goals."

Andreas Athanasiou, who had 30 goals in 76 games last season, has eight goals in 44 games this season.

"I think when times are like that I think it's just overshooting the puck," Athanasiou said. "Not trying to get too fancy. It's been a little bit crazy. There hasn't been too many goals. I think we've had a lot of chances, they just haven't found the back of the net. I think at those points, you just have to work through it and kind of let your hard work take over and overshoot the puck."

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Athanasiou, though going through a largely disappointing season (eight goals, 14 assists in 44 games with a league-worst minus-44 rating), could ignite a team with a fresh start.

Athanasiou is a restricted free agent on July 1. But at age 25, and having scored 30 goals last season, Athanasiou appears to have plenty of good hockey ahead of him.

There are teams that certainly could be in the market for a potentially dynamic offensive player.

► Colorado tops the list, after losing forward Mikko Rantanen the other day for two months with a possible shoulder injury.

The Avalanche also are rumored to be interested in Montreal forward (and former Red Wing) Tomas Tatar, among others, but Athanasiou would certainly be in the mix.

► Edmonton, with former Wings’ general manager Ken Holland in charge, would be a natural fit for Athanasiou.

The Oilers are still without star forward Connor McDavid for another week or two, but are clinging to the Pacific Division lead.

Having the speedy Athanasiou on a line with McDavid, and/or scoring leader Leon Draisaitl (95 points), would provide a nice boost.

The Oilers also have an intriguing bargaining chip in forward Jesse Puljujarvi, a former draft pick who is playing in Finland.

more, Vancouver mentioned too…

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

He has the potential to be an impact player, but general manager Steve Yzerman might be hard-pressed to get a good offer right now because Athanasiou’s value has gone down compared to where he finished last season.

Still, he could draw interest. The Colorado Avalanche lost forward Mikko Rantanen Monday for what the team described as “weeks” to an upper-body injury, and already are without three other forwards.

Fil has a sizzling -41 , there ar quite a few with over -20 and those don’t include bench warmers, Aby, etc.  Just a very BAD, Very Weird season

You guessed it, more AA talk…

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Athanasiou’s struggles might make him expendable. His speed and scoring potential could be coveted by other teams. Perhaps a change of scenery would spark the player who scored 30 goals last season.

But the Red Wings might opt to hang onto Athanasiou in hopes his production spikes and his trade value increases in the off-season.

Athanasiou, 25, doesn’t appear bothered by trade rumors.

“I don’t really pay attention to it too much,” Athanasiou said. “You never know what’s going to happen. You just kind of block it out, don’t really listen to it and just come ready to play hockey.”

Athanasiou has eight goals and 14 assists in 44 games, along with an NHL-worst minus-44 rating. He has missed 17 games with injuries.

I don’t doubt it, I’d be fueling them if anything - whatever it takes to get onto a team with a chance!

Sorry, Hoot, but you got that wrong. The Game Plan is to “win and look good doing it.” What you listed is what will actually happen during the game. It’s what happens when a Plan doesn’t come together.  LOL
