So the fact that the Red Wings now have nothing to sacrifice except for their jobs and pride make them a dangerous unit in Sunday’s game against the Calgary Flames.
“I know what it’s like to play at the end of the season (with no playoff hopes),” said Flames forward Mikael Backlund. “Everyone is trying to play hard and doing the best they can on the ice, playing for something. Whether it’s a new contract or to stay on the team or for each other.
“They’re going to come out hard, and we know that.”...
“Sometimes those are the hardest teams to play — they’re playing with nothing to lose,” said Flames winger Milan Lucic. “They’re playing loose. That’s when they tend to make plays and take chances. We can’t look at Boston, Nashville, Tampa and Florida without focusing on Detroit. We have to make sure we’re ready for that one.”
