Cotsonika...

Yzerman said his feelings haven't changed on Blashill. "I have no plans on making a coaching change at this time."

Cotsonika,

Yzerman said ultimately the Red Wings need to draft and develop. That's the only way they're going to get it turned around.

Galli tweets,

Steve Yzerman would love for the Red Wings to get back on the ice together sooner than later, but says “it’s not feasible” between league rules and gov’t restrictions.

Steve Yzerman says he thinks an NHL Draft combine is possible, but he doesn’t think it’s gonna happen.

Good point: prospects are spread across the globe.

Galli,

Yzerman asked if his plan of aggression has increased:

“Maybe slightly,” he said. He wants to help the Red Wings young core, mentioning Larkin, Mantha, Bertuzzi.

Wakiji,

Yzerman said prepared to do what they can in free agency but not focused on making a splash, wants sensible signings.

Cotsonik,

Yzerman said the Red Wings need help in every area, and it's going to take time to do that.

added 1:41pm, Wakiji,

Yzerman said they'll get deals done with RFA like Mantha, Bertuzzi but term and AAV remain to be seen.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman says he has no plans to make a coaching change, meaning Jeff Blashill will be back for the 2020-21 season.

Yzerman spoke with media on during a Wednesday afternoon Zoom call, his first availability with reporters since Feb. 24, and the day after the NHL cancelled the remainder of the 2019-20 season because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Wings had a league-worst 17-49-5 record when the NHL paused the season on March 12.

Blashill has compiled a 153-194-52 record in 399 games with the Wings.

This should rustle some jimmies.

Obviously Yzerman knows what’s going on in the room and player by player progression, in Yzerman we trust, shortened season, with a goal of drafting top 5 again, ok, Jeff stays.

The cynic in me wonders tho, if a new coach is brought in and the team continues to fail, how long is the blame holland rope before it turns to the new guys.

Whatever takes the focus off your head!

Thanks RGEP, not sure why they say it is live since it took place two hours ago, so I am going to hold off to see where this goes.

*shrug*

He’s not *wrong* per se. The ream really isn’t all that good right now, so it will take getting some better talent on the ice to show whether Blash really is a decent coach, or if he’s just one of the many problems plaguing this team right now.

Whether we fail with or without Blash, I will always bleed red and white. LGRW!

Blades got me thinking maybe it would be on youtube and it was there but it didn’t have any info except it said live so I didn’t know it was recorded until it started.

Its tooooo easy.

Also, if yzerman wants sensible signings, can we get in the quantum realm and not sign filppula again?

I think I heard his dog barking in the back ground so probably streaming from home but its 85 degrees outside and he is wearing a hoodie. Must have the AC cranked.

I met Coach Blashill a couple of times, and one was a meet and greet after a Pre Thanksgiving Game against Boston in 2018. I told him he was dealt a bad hand, and he agreed with me. He has won at all previous levels, and he obviously has inherited a train wreck of of Red Wing team.  Hoping for the best for him and the team going forward. cheese

Maybe if Yzerman had shut his mouth and not complained about the timing of the draft. he wouldn’t have had anything to complain about.

Or better yet, after the Daly memo became public actively campaigned on how he was wrong and the NHL had so much more to gain from holding the draft early vs later. Then the Wings could have benefited from being down-limited to selecting 2nd overall….

but it’s a little late in the process to say how badly the lottery is structured (even if it is 100% true).

Want to impress me. Don’t complain during the local media season review. Complain during the lottery show to the national media and bring up the fact that Pittsburgh or Edmonton can win the 1st overall pick despite having a 47 and 44 pts difference in the standings. Talk about how ridiculous that possibility is. Put the weasel Buttman on the defensive. Talk about how difficult the draft becomes when team much higher in the standings push your club back a few spots in the draft. But make sure you do it before they announce the results.

That’s a revisionist history. Blashill took over a 100 point playoff team with working knowledge of many of the players having coached their AHL team the previous 3 seasons and been an assistant on Babcock’s ‘11-‘12 team.

Blashill inherited Tony Granato (who ran the Wings’defense and penalty-killing team) and Blash pushed for Pat Ferschweiler, who was an assistant coach with him in GR. Ferschweiler was hired to run the power-play. If you remember the Wings power play had ranked second in the league the year before Blash’s arrival. Want to know why the Wings ‘15-‘16 season went down the tubes….it was the power play that went 50 of 266 (18.80%) for 13th overall and down from 23.81% and 2nd the year before (during which Z, Dats, and Mule missed significant time). And it wasn’t just in the regular season it was in the playoffs when it counted and the players had knowledge of the “new-system” Ferschweiler installed. In the playoffs The Lightning killed 24 of 25 Red Wings power plays during the series, including two Detroit 5-on-3 advantages. That was the difference in that series…coaching. Not inheriting a raw deal.

FYI Valtteri Filppula won 56.4 percent of his faceoffs for the Lightning that series on the PK.

Also, throw in Blash’s inability to make in-game adjustments. Tampa Bay outscored the Detroit 6-1 in the third period during that series.

So, Blash is directly responsible for the Wings losing in ‘15-‘16 because of his decisions. Let’s not let him off the hook because he’s a nice guy.

Blash also proceeded to let long-time goaltending coach Bryan Bedard go in favor of Mrazek’s AHL coach Jeff Salajko. Only to have Mrazek take steps backwards and Jimmy Howard win back the job.

Blash hired John Torchetti who in ‘16-‘17 to run the power play: continuing to stink—-bottoming out at a league-worse 10.9% in early February and slipping to 24th in the league.

Blash then took over the power-play duties. His comments a year later when he hired Dan Bylsma tell you all you need to know about that year…

“He’s (Dan’s) always been real good on [coaching] the faceoffs, and having a good plan on the faceoffs, and specifically on the power play. And honestly, that’s something — I haven’t been good enough.”

The power-play continued to slip in ‘18-19 and then ‘19-‘20 finishing at 14.88% this past season. Despite having two snipers in Mantha and PP specialist Thomas Vanek.

...and that ignores the whole they hired him because he can develop young players vs Andreas Athanasiou’s and Mrazek’s exits.

So yeah, Blash is a nice guy and has the temperament to coach developing players. I just feel he’s not the coach to take the next step from bottoming out.

To me he was retained because 1) Gallant is going to NJD with their haul of top-tiered talent and more importantly 2) the 20-21 season is going to be compacted in terms of training camp and ability to practice between games. So why not go with what you have when the outcome is going to be a bottom 7 team anyways.

I don’t disagree with your points.  But if we’re living in revisionist history…

Anyone who thought a rookie head coach was coming in to hold serve or make an aging team better than a guy who left to be the highest paid coach in NHL history especially after 10 season of what was all accounts a hard pushing coach, was naive.  The day Babcock cleaned out his desk, this team got 10 games worse, that’s the reality of history.

Then as Zetterberg and Pavel woke up each morning and got older, as the league and players around them got younger, the team slid worse, they were this teams only real talent, and frankly they got old.

To ignore the above is not fair to the counter point.

Good points Murray. Babcock jumped off a sinking ship. While some of Blashill’s moves seemed questionable like any coach’s would be, he still inherited a dumpster fire. Letting go of Jim Bedard go was his biggest blunder, although it did seem to revive Jimmy Howard’s career while Petr Mrazek continued with his on/off play.  surprised

We all wanted Babcock gone, even all the players!  He left because Toronto always was throwing money but he found out Toronto was a rotating turnstyle, you go in with welcoming handshakes and slaps on the back and out with a bootprint on your ass.  Where is he now??? and look who is coaching and general manager, college kids!
