Starting Early: Live Blogging The Game That Should Have Been And Listening To The Emperor

Interesting sidenote to the Game 7 ditty that many of you have stricken from your alcohol-riddled memories: the Wings were the better team. The Wings are always the better team.  But by the time G7, R2 rolled around last year…Detroit was rolling.  Here’s what we said when we kicked off the last Live Blog of last season...

And here’s something else:  Wings win tonite and they become the favorites. I mean, THE favorites.  The favorites to beat Vancouver, the favorites to win the whole damn thing.  San Jose wins and nobody with a brain cell picks them to go any further than five or six games against the Canucks.

You can’t argue with that. You just can’t.  Nothing was exaggerated and nothing was wrong.  Had the Wings won that, Vancouver would have been history.  And Boston’s not built to deal with the depth of Detroit.  Nobody is, really.  Except for Columbus…and Washington.

It’s so early. Golly, it’s early.  But you have to figure that the Wings feel a little dirty after getting their asses handed to them by the worst team in the league, just after a spanking in DC.  You have to think that if any night is ripe for a reckoning, it’s tonite.

So, Live Blog this bitch. Go on now. Live blog it.  Before you do, because you dig your Live Blogs and whatever else falls on this site from time to time when I get the energy to write, click here and do what the Emperor tells you to do.

I also think the FSD gang is being charitable as all hell by calling that a “marginal call”—nothing marginal about that—the ref along the goal line is just basically pulling that out of his ass.

Just popped in to see what you guys were saying about Homer being robbed again.  Even the NHL analyst said that was a bad call, that Homer had every right to that ice outside the crease.  And he wasn’t blocking Niemi - he was shooting the puck!

Anyway, great effort in the last 15 minutes of that period when we outshot them 9-1 and Jimmeh is spectacular!

LGRW!!!!!

Yep, sure do.

The league has apparently deemed it illegal for Homer to do things like that.

Lets see.. Yes.. Laying on your side, not facing the goal.. and still managing to shoot the puck into the net.. out of the crease.. Totally Goalie Interference.

On any other team, that’s a goal.

The NHL Network guys are disgusted with the wave-off, too.

Sounds like someone is going to be getting a call from Little Gary tomorrow.  And looking for employment elsewhere.

Apparently the NHL is showing the game in KellySutherland-o-vision.  Be sure to drop a nickel or dime in his tin cup on your way out.

Professional Analysis of Homers non-goal:

The waived goals drive me crazy.  I could understand if Homer had prevented Niemi from moving laterally (Homer would have had to be in the paint in the first place), but if Niemi moves out into the paint and makes contact it should be on him.  Lets have a crease rule or no crease rule.  This grey area crap makes me insane.

Yeah, I don’t like the call either.

But the way the rule is written screws over the attacking player regardless.

Everything in the rule indicates where the goalie is positioned, not where the attacking player is. And regardless of where the goalie is positioned, he gets first right to any spot on the ice in an attempt to make a save. Even if pushed by a defender, as homer appeared to be, it is still up to the attacking player to make every effort to avoid contact. Just one more excuse for the stripes to wave off a goal.

I understand that.  But my question is why is that rule primarily used against only one player in the entire league?  Hell we’ve seen JHoward get stepped on in the crease and no call.

I’m afraid you’re right on both counts.  ToddyMac loves him some 1-2-2 trap when his team gets ahead.  Gotta score on this PP to get the thing back even to get them out of their trap.
