St. James: Osgood’s Likely Back

Helene doesn’t say how she knows, but we assume she got a text from a BFF and hence…

The Red Wings have scheduled a conference call for Tuesday where they are expected to announce goaltender Chris Osgood will be back for another season.

If she’s right, we’re to assume Osgood is completely healthy. No ill effects from the groin or whatever else has ailed him for the past two seasons.

Right?  Sentimentality’s a wicked drug.

For the record, I’m against this.  Nothing about Osgood the last two seasons gives us any indication that this is a smart move.  The minute Osgood says he’s coming back, the best backup on the market (to include him) is gone and this time for good. Ty Conklin should have been signed two weeks ago.

Could St. James be wrong? Sure.  But that would mean some seriously risky speculation on her part.  Too risky for our conservative Diggers.  Also, a conference call? Chris Osgood is not going to retire via conference call.

For those who are sentimental…

565 games played (2nd in franchise history)
317 wins (2nd)
0.905 save percentage (5th)
39 shutouts (2nd)
14145 shots faced (1st)
12801 saves (1st)

Yup, no doubt about it.  Osgood’s large number of wins is quite obviously exaggerated by the great Wings teams he played behind.  Why, lookit that measly amount of rubber he faced!  And of course, he never won a Norris Trophy.

Just not HOF material.

Difference is that in the last two years each and every other choice has played NHL calibre hockey.

Enh.  That’s largely hyperbole.  Osgood was mediocre last year, as were pretty much all the other goalies on your list.  Going back two or three or four years is moderately pointless.

In fact, most of your post was a lesson in the dangers of hyperventilation, Garth.

That’s okay.  There has been hyperventilation of one sort or another from Wings fans going on around Osgood his whole career.  Why would his last year or few weeks be any different?

Yup, defending an opinion = hyperventilation when it comes to preferring that Ozzie retire.

It’s not the defense of an opinion, obviously.  It’s the hyperbolic, incendiary way in which the opinion is, er, ‘defended’ which makes me smile a bit.

Given this is just a digital medium, but I could almost smell desperation wafting off your posts, as though Osgood retiring or no was an Event of Import.

It’s not.  It’s a guy who is now a mediocre goalie retiring to be replaced by… another mediocre goalie.

Most of the hyperventilation comes from people (in this case, you) appearing to believe his return presaged Bad Things (tm), which other goalies will prevent.

Enh.  That’s silly.  Oh well, with Osgood gone you’ll be free to likely overreact to a few different moves now… so there’s that.

Hyperbolic and incendiary?

Where?  Has Osgood played well the past two years?

And yeah, I guess the sarcastic line about goaltending by committee was where the hyperventilation came from.

Right?

Hey, maybe you stop pretending you know what I’m thinking?

What if I do?  Would that offend your delicate sensibilities?
