Special Teams Need Work

10/21/2019 at 3:02pm EDT

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

As the Detroit Red Wings try to end a losing skid, one area that’s under scrutiny is their power play.

It’s inefficiency has sunk to 9.5% after going 0-for-6 on the Western Canada trip, which included a 97-second two-man advantage. That came against the Vancouver Canucks, whom the Wings host Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit).

The Wings haven’t had a ton of power plays – 21 – but they have only converted on two of those. And both goals belong to Anthony Mantha. Only two other players have power play points: defenseman Dennis Cholowski and forward Taro Hirose, each of whom has two assists.

Special teams took up a good chunk of Monday’s practice.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
