Abel to Yzerman

Quick Recap- DRW/CBJ

If you thought Detroit's Reverse Retro Jersey was going to take the team back to the glory years, well you were wrong.

Although the Wings had a so-so first period, the score was tied at 1-1.

A whole different story in the middle 20.  The Blue Jackets added 3 goals while the Wings only had 4 shots compared to 17 by Columbus.

At the start of the third period, Thomas Greiss replaced Jonathan Bernier and did not allow a goal but Detroit failed to score too.

Final- Columbus Blue Jackets 4 Detroit Red Wings 1

Detroit goal is below.

Well that Sucked!!! Majorally!

I thought Ras was one of the best forwards. Nemeth needs to sit. The team lost the stick battles, along the boards they were owned, loose puck battles they were owned….... On and on.

And no blender. The second was the time to use the blender.

Yucko ChuckO!

What an effort ..isn’t it ?

Usually i’m hiding behind the couch cause i’m too nervous to watch…this time it was because i was embarrassed..

Our zone is a triple lane highway. No one can check, no one plays physical, no one can perform a zone coverage. The opponent knows it a they skate around our net with a smile…life is good !

Even Helm and Ryan, who always give an effort, didnt seem to care…like the other one really.

Yeah we miss some players but its just like that for every teams…but lose this one without a fight is unnacceptable…

I give a note of zero to everyone who played tonight.

Man,  that second was a stinker.  The amount of HORRIBLE turnovers in this game was epic.  The glove side on Bernier too, they had his number.  Good scouting.

Their play was almost as sad as those duct tape trimmed practice jerseys they were wearing. At least glendening won a bunch of faceoffs again. I know they have to find a positive to focus on but holy cow it’s about time to add “take a drink when glendening’s face off percentage is mentioned” to the red wings drinking game

Good to see Mantha unleash a rocket, noticed him backchecking and moving his feet a couple times too!

For those who say effort was not there, I am curious to know which players exactly did not put enough effort. Constant “targets” Nils and Fil did not even play.

I think effort was there, but Columbus is just a better team (much better when we are missing our best players)..

The good news, PP has been much better in the past 3-4 games.

The lack of physical play and attitude was apparent last night. I think this is a Blash problem. If you remember after Svetch’s first game he had a goal and an assist and he was asked why he didn’t get into a fight to complete the Gordy Howe hat trick and he replied that he didn’t want to get sent back down.

Is Blash taking the feistiness out of the team on purpose to fit the defense first win the game by one goal strategy?  Sure sounds like it.

So the Wings played a better team desperate to win a game to stay alive, who’s coach is being questioned, and did so without two of their best players on a roster already limited by talent.

That said, while the Wings were outplayed last night, but I didn’t think it was too bad to be honest.  The CBJs just sniped last night, cold hearted snipes,  that slap shot on Bernier was a precision guided rocket.  The 4th goal though, despite also being placed perfectly into the top corner, was a shot from outside and underneath the faceoff dot, that’s one the tender owns.

Good to see Mantha score, and I like Blash’s new PP units moving Ryan and Mantha on the flanks so its not obvious who we’re trying to set up, same with Zadina and Schevy (who I thought might be a better net front player but what do I know) and having Djoos replaced Hronek on the top unit, Djoos is much better as the QB back there, he’s got some talent, that move and pass to Fabri was very smooth, Fabri should’ve finished that, something you don’t see a lot of from the Wings, good waiver pickup by Yzerman.

I was very happy to see the physicality out of Ras last night, he really delivered some big hits, and he’s coming out of a lot more true puck battles with control. Schevy played well too, made a few nice little skill plays out there, looks less lost defensively, lots of hustle.

I was not unhappy with Mantha last night, he’s so big 2 long hard strides gets him where he needs to be, so i’m not sure the lazy tag is always applicable to him compared to someone chopping their legs like the food court salad guy.

Agree with most, and have noticed that about Svech as well. Lots of hustle, can tell he’s got solid hands, isn’t afraid of using his size, but still notice his head swiveling from time to time in the D zone trying to figure out/decide where he needs to be/who he should be picking up. Only his 3rd game of the season so it’s not the end of the world, but is definitely something to focus on for developing a style that will keep in him Detroit.

Yes, my guess is that Svech instigating a fight in a game where they are winning just so he could achieve an imaginary statistic would indeed get him sent down.

100%, this will take some time for him, and I don’t doubt that it could get bumpy for him.

Schevy is THE player on the DRW who was most impacted by Covid in that he didn’t get a post trade deadline call up, because the season was cut, he didn’t get an extended camp, got no preseason, no tape to mull over, and now has limited practice time.  He’s really thrust into the middle of a season, playing pre-season hockey, its going to be up to him to continue to take in the coaching, work the game tape, and talk to his team mates on the bench and in the room.

The Wings had 4 shots in the 2 period to the BJs 17. The were very much outplayed. I agree the BJs were hungry and had some nice shots but the Wings were out battled everywhere on the ice. And Chevy and Ras locked better than Ryan, Gagner and a few more vets.
