The usual suspects are all chiming in, predicting the Wing demise. Strachan and Montgomery today. Proteau and Campbell yesterday. More will surely follow as we get closer to Game 1. John Buccigross is today’s only dissenter.
• No. 1 Red Wings vs. No. 8 Flames: I keep going back and forth on this one. Calgary has the experience to win this series. Detroit has some injuries, but the Red Wings are well coached as opposed to the past when the Wings would play into opponents’ hands. Just when I think I’m going to write Calgary in seven, I want to write Red Wings in seven. That’s it. Red Wings in seven.
When the intensity gets cranked up in the playoffs, the Wings don’t seem to have the kind of players who respond. Pavel Datsyuk, for instance, has been nothing short of horrible.
The Flames are not a happy group, but often, teams of this nature get together before the postseason and say something along the lines of, “Forget the coach and GM and the rest of the front office. Let’s just play for ourselves.”
If that happens, the Flames will win. Take Calgary.
Ted Montgomery/USA Today
The Wings are the better team — they had 17 more points than the Flames — but everyone knows that means nothing now, especially for the Red Wings. They are banged up (Henrik Zetterberg missed most of the second half of the season, and Hasek, Nicklas Lidstrom and Todd Bertuzzi are nursing injuries), and it will be a tough job to hold down the Flames. This could be an upset in the making
Prediction: Calgary in six games.
Once again, Ted Montgomery’s originality is awe inspiring. “The Wings are the better team but…”. Haven’t seen that before Ted. He really solidifies his credibility with one of his other picks, though: Nashville in 7 over San Jose. Chances of that occuring: zero.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
