Plan B

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Forward Trevor Zegras (NTDP), forward Dylan Cozens (Lethbridge, WHL), forward Kirby Dach (Saskatoon, WHL), defenseman Bowen Byram (Vancouver, WHL), forward Matthew Boldy (NTDP), defenseman Victor Soderstrom (Sweden) and forward Alex Turcotte (NTDP) are available.

Holland said Monday, at the Red Wings’ locker cleanout, regardless of where the Wings wound up picking, there was a good chance of drafting a player who will help the Wings.

“Certainly, the focus is on the top end of the draft and getting a star, maybe a superstar player,” Holland said. “Hopefully we get lucky in the lottery and we get a high pick. But we’re going to add another good player and I’m excited.”

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

An enticing, high-end prospect will still be available at sixth. The Wings may be able to stoke their defensive depth by drafting Bowen Byram, the highest-rated defenseman available in the draft. Byram (6-0, 193) had 26 goals among 71 points in 67 games with Vancouver Giants in the Western Hockey League this season. He’s a puck-moving workhorse who can play in any situation.

The Wings have had a lot of eyes on centers Dylan Cozens and Kirby Dach. Both could be gone by six, but last year the Wings didn’t expect Filip Zadina to be available to them at that slot. Cozens (6-3, 180) is a fast, physical, two-way forward who had 34 goals among 84 points in 68 games with Lethbridge in the WHL. Dach (6-4, 197) is a creative playmaker who produced 73 points in 62 games with Saskatoon (WHL).

While Hughes is the star of the Plymouth-based NTDP this season, there are other players from the squad who intrigue. Left wing Matthew Boldy (6-2, 192) scored 30 goals among 69 points in 55 games. The Milford native is a strong skater with a terrific shot and a high hockey IQ. Alex Turcotte (5-11, 185) is a two-way center with high-end speed who had 30 assists among 53 points in 30 games.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
