Out Past The Cornfields Where The Woods Got Heavy? That’s Where It Has To Start

You've got some time so I want you to do something for me.  Go whip out your "Live Bullet" and cue up the greatest rock and roll song of our generation, "Night Moves".  Early on, just after Seger tells us about the aforementioned cornfields?

That's when he throws the line at us about the backseat of his '60 Chevy.  He doesn't sing it though.  He states it. Proclaims it. Brags about it. In the live version, Seger's swagger is unreal. He did some drilling that entire summer and he's not shy telling us about it.

Our boys used to drill like that.  Our boys used to lay pipe. Backrooms, alleys, trusty woods.  They'd live by the sword because that's what Red Wings did.  They slung that shit because they could, because it's what young men with talent did in a target rich environment.

Well, the hunting's not so good these days and more than a few of us have found ourselves a little sad, humming tunes from 1997 or 2002 or 2008.

And it could all end tonight, or Sunday.  Lose these two and the streak's over, the era fades away.

Chicago is a beast.  A circling, dangerous, darting dirvish. Too much talent.  Every line a hazard. Stingy. Well managed. Invincible, I'm sure.

I'm sure of it.  The Hawks simply cannot be beaten, not by this Wing team.  Too broken. Too old.  Too stale.  Poorly designed and downright neglected by a GM who have been fooling us all for years.

But if they win tonite?  I wonder. I wonder what a win tonite could do, if it would be enough to remind these Wings of what they used to be, of the villages they burned, the swath they so brazenly cut back when we were getting much more than our share.

A win tonite lets them wait on the thunder, you know.  It does.  A win tonite doesn't guarantee jack shit but it does enough to remind themselves, and Chicago, that counting out these Wings may be ill advised.

What an odd ditty. With 8 games left the Wings are dealing with mysteries without any clues.  A new place where none of us expect much. It's a Live Blog, bitches.

For the first time in several weeks Detro-yet is not the team that controls its own destiny.  It is Dallas.

Dallas can tie Detroit tomorrow ( Home v SJS) and hold the tie breaker with more Regulation/Overtime Wins.

and the last game of the season is Detroit vs Dallas, which means they probably WILL control its own destiny.

Bonjour. Well, it was a gritty effort by the Wings and I guess taking a point from Chicago is a giant step up from the drubbing they took last time.  So I’m glad for that.

Does the strength of schedule mean anything?  Of course, that’s a stupid question, but motivation and timing will modify that.  Chicago will remain a tough opponent, shows no signs of coasting, rather determination to finish each game and not give up even 1 point.

Dallas plays Chicago once, and has no opponents earning less than .500.

Detroit has 3 games against <.500 opponents.

PHX only has Colorado as an “easy” game, but faces both Chicago and Anaheim, and 5/7 opponents are earning over .600.

CBJ has only 1 home game with 6 on the road, the only team significantly imbalanced home or away.

MIN has 5 games against sub .500 teams, and plays neither Chicago nor Anaheim.

According to the Free Press the Red Wings are “pointed in the right direction”.  Last night my car was pointed in the right direction, but nothing happened when I turned the key.

I do.  Why else would I have kept it so long?

It is official.  Dallas has overtaken the Detroy-et Red Wings for the last playoff position after 41 games, based on first tie breaker, Regulation and Overtime wins, which is by a convincing 2 wins.

And with a win by shootout, not only does CBJ gain 2 points on Detroit, Minnesota pushes out another point for exploring in overtime.

One cure.  Win 5 of the last 7 games.

Even if your car had started I doubt it would have moved.  Flat tires from all that kicking.

One cure.  Win 5 of the last 7 games.

The only surefire cure now is to win all seven.

For all intents and purposes, that was a season-ending loss.
