Defenseman or forward? Size or speed?

The 2018 NHL entry draft starts Friday with the first round, and the Detroit Red Wings have two selections to make. They have the sixth overall pick, and given the depth of talent available within the top 10 projected picks, should get a player who will be key to the rebuilding effort. They pick again at 30th, where they have Vegas’ pick stemming from the Tomas Tatar trade.

Rasmus Dahlin is the consensus to go first overall, and Andrei Svechnikov, Filip Zadina and Brady Tkachuk are all expected to be gone by the time the Wings make their first pick.

The Wings might move back if Vancouver (seventh overall), Chicago (eighth) or the New York Rangers (ninth) provide an incentive to swap picks — for example, if the Rangers offered their second-round pick, a scenario could have the Wings pick ninth and gain the 39th pick. The Wings are not moving out of the top 10.
