Notes Before Tonight’s Pre-Season Game

from Dana Wakiji of DetroitRedWings.com,

Detroit Red Wings fans will get to see a fresh face and some welcome young veteran faces when the team hosts the New York Islanders in their third exhibition game tonight at Little Caesars Arena.

The fresh face is Oliwer Kaski, the free agent Finnish defenseman the Wings signed May 28.

Like several other players, Kaski was nursing a tweak or two after a tough training camp but is finally ready to play.

During the morning skate, Kaski was running the point on the power-play unit that had Michael Rasmussen, Taro Hirose, Adam Erne and Filip Hronek.

"I want to see him on the power play," Wings coach Jeff Blashill said of Kaski. "Obviously, see (Dennis) Cholowski on the power play and Hronek. You only have so many spots but a real good chance for Kaski."

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Zadina, the much-hyped 2018 first-round pick, has one year of pro hockey completed, was coming off a good prospects tournament performance, and appeared ready to go for the exhibition season.

He wasn’t interested in talking about his confidence level, though.

“I’ll show you on the ice,” Zadina said.

Zadina was to be in the lineup Friday night against the Islanders for the second time this preseason. He had the primary assist Wednesday on Taro Hirose’s power-play goal, Zadina’s shot deflecting to Hirose for a one-timer.

It’s been a good start for Zadina, still only 19, but whether he can do enough to make the opening night roster remains to be seen.

If Zadina can show enough to warrant a spot on the top two lines, maybe even the third, and get sufficient ice time, there might be a path to the roster.

Haven’t watched much this preseason but would also like to see Veleno and Rasmussen center Hirose and AA since Larkin will center the top line, not sure how much speed Filppula das lost.

I saw Kaski play a little last year and was really impressed by his tenacity.  Hope he makes the big team!
