Note To Uncle Mike:  How ‘Bout Buckets?

The smart kids out there, the guys who have spent the last five or six years of their lives going to JV medical school and learning how to count the right amount of pills to slide into a prescription bottle?  They’d probably tell you that, based on their high PCAT and LSAT and SUCKIT scores?  Rosby should be the captain of Team Canada.

Me? I’m not that smart, obviously, and I’m not Canadian(en).  But I’ll go out on a limb and suggest someone who might be a little more effective when it comes to leading a hockey team.

How about Dan Cleary?  Would anyone serve as a greater source of motivation than him?  Has anyone on that team had to weather as much adversity?  I wonder if you compare the levels of respect between Cleary and Rosby, where each would fall in the eyes of pro hockey players.

Whoa..slow down.  He hasn’t even made the team.  There’s a good chance he won’t.  But the fact remains that should he make it?  He’s going to be a leader because he wants it maybe more than anyone.

Steve Yzerman and Mike Babcock will have the final say and my bet is they’ve already ruled Crosby out, mainly because he’s proven to be the opposite of what they expect in a leader, a captain or even a professional for that matter.  Simply, you just don’t punch guys in the nuts and expect to lead men.  Kind of goes against the code, you know.  I’ve read that Niedermayer is a consideration.  Can’t stand him either.  But I’d bet there are many in his camp. Iginla’s too.

But Cleary…you have to admit it’s interesting.  If he makes the team and he’s named Captain…tell me that nation wouldn’t rally around a blue-collar guy like him.  Not that Canadian(en)s would need any more motivation, but Charlie Buckets as their Captain might send them over the edge.

And as for us?  Well, Pierre LeBrun makes a good point.  He’s going to be flying the first sixty days of the season.

It just so happens Team Canada coach Mike Babcock will have a front-row seat to Cleary’s opening two months of the season, when he’ll make his case for an Olympic spot.

“You know, I don’t feel any pressure at all. Things will take care of itself,” said Cleary. “You just have to play like you can and not try to overextend yourself. You’re not trying to score 20 goals before Christmas. Just play your game, a good two-way game. I feel that’s why I was here. You try not to change anything.”

I’m no pharmacist, you know.  I’m just not that smart.  My social skills, the kind required to wear a white lab coat and hide behind a pane of glass all day while demanding that people call you “doctor”, are also obviously lacking in comparison.  So, take my suggestion with a grain of salt.  But, if Uncle Mike and Stevie Y wanted to shake some things up?  Captain Cleary may be an answer.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y.
