Gotta give your boy George Malik credit. When Wing news hits those pulsing Russian news wires, he’s on it like….(insert Bubba line here. I’ve exhausted all mine.)
Today? Igor Grigorenko tells some Russian writer for some Russian paper that he’s done with the mother country come Detroit or Grand Rapids.
According to Malik, “Grigorenko sounds like he’s determined to make the NHL, whatever it takes, though he doesn’t state whether he’d be willing to play in the AHL to become a full-time Wing.”
I tend to agree but have to tell you reading those Russian translations makes me want to put my foot on the floor to stop the bed spins.
“The first [game], [from] what I have paid attention - in the NHL [there’s] very high rate of game,” tells Igor. “I need to get used to this. And in the rest…In due course all will be good.”
“Yes, I have made a decision, that it is time to try already myself [across the Ocean from Russia]. [I have] sat, thought and, understood - now or never. I told [my] teammates from “Salavat” that decided to leave for “Detroit”. They have supported me, [saying]: ‘Dare, make your way. Back [here] we don’t wait for you - fix in NHL.’ After these words I have understood, that the correct choice was made.
Not Grigorenko’s fault, obviously. Young Russian kid, still learning the language…and he still makes more sense than Mike Babcock.
What is Grigorenko’s fault?
Well, not showing up ready for his first, and possibly only, shot with the Wings. If this has meant as much to him as you’d think, he would have been in the condition of his life. Speed…yeah, we know it’s lacking and we can accept that. But a fat-ass with no work ethic, if that’s the case, is inexcusable.
Now…Mike Babcock gave the impressionthat the Russian Tkachuk may just well already have a spot, or at least he hinted at that to George Sipple in the JV Digger’s investigative piece on locker assignments this morning.
“Datsyuk’s going to be next to (Igor) Grigorenko if Grigorenko can find a way” to make the team, Babcock said.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
