Ansar Khan of Mlive answers a few questions from the fans,
Regarding the draft....
If they win the lottery, they will take Dahlin, guaranteed. They need a franchise defenseman and Dahlin (Frolunda, Sweden League) is considered by many analysts to be the best blue line prospect in ages. Most expect him to go No. 1 regardless of who gets the pick.
The Red Wings have employed the “best player available (in their opinion)” strategy with their top pick, forward or defenseman, for as long as I can recall. As a result, they’ve taken a defenseman only once in the past 10 seasons with their first selection (Dennis Cholowski in 2016).
If they wind up with the second or third pick, I think they’ll take one of two wingers – Andrei Svechnikov, the brother of their 2015 first pick, Evgeny, of Barrie (OHL) or Brady Tkachuk of Boston University.
If they select fourth or lower and Svechnikov and Tkachuk are off the board, I could see them taking a defenseman. Several, after Dahlin, are projected to go in the top 10, including Quinn Hughes of Michigan, Adam Boqvist of Brynas Juniors (Sweden), Evan Bouchard of London (OHL) and Noah Dobson of Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL).
