I’ve been inundated (sorry, Bubba…“flooded”) with emails asking me to keep everyone up to speed on the likelihood of a Smyth deal in Detroit.
Well, inundated might be too strong. Actually, no one’s really asked about it.
But it’s my agenda and I plan on pushing it. So here we go.
That little lovable squad down in MO is apparently showing interest. Yes, the Blues, ever striving to equal the greatness that has become Detroit, have the Wings future winger on their radar. J.D sounds guardedly optimistic.
“There are 30 teams out there, and there are going to be teams that want somebody bad, teams who are very close to winning,” Davidson said. “It’ll be an interesting battle. But we’ll get somebody.”
Who that somebody is will largely depend on how much money Davidson’s boss, Dave Checketts, wants to shell out and still stay well below the Cap. Spector points us to a separate part of the story that claims the Blues have suddenly joined the ranks of the cheap bastard owners in Chicago and Buffalo, will not approach the expected 49 million upper limit.
Jeremy Rutherford reports the NHL’s salary cap might rise to $49 million next season but the Blues payroll will be set at $35 million. Rutherford notes team owner Dave Checketts could go as high as $40 million, leaving management with $5 million to spend in the UFA market but it won’t be enough to land any of the big name scorers available.
No Smyth for you.
Uh-oh. Looks like Smyth news is going to be tough to come by if the future Wing won’t discuss where and when he’s going to meet with Ken Holland.
The American TV ratings for game one of the Stanley Cup final were down 18% from the first contest of last year’s championship. But how is the NHL supposed to sell its product if the players won’t sell themselves? Ryan Smyth was at the game Monday but would only allow “Hockey Night in Canada” to interview him if they agreed not to ask about his free agent status. That’s a joke. Fans love to speculate about where the big free agent fish will land and to not even address the issue made the HNIC-Smyth interview a complete waste of time…..

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
