Mule, My Friend…It’s Time To Dream Like A Young Man

Okie...this morning.

The Flames defense is horrible, 3.38 GA/G, 0.68 5-5 F/A;  both marks second worst in the league.

Win or go home.

I had a boss a long time ago that had a nifty ditty he'd pull out only when the time was exactly right.  Most times he was sarcastic, demanding, unrelenting.  We all saw that and most of us dug it.  There were occasions, though, when that temper would flare and the highlight reel would start spinning.  One day, I witnessed him look up from his desk, slowly.  He paused for a minute and let that gaze burn into this kid standing in front of him.  And then he said, "You're lying to me.  That's irritating.  You want to play fuch-fuch with me?

Good. Let's play fuch-fuch."

And then the destruction began.  And it was a thing to behold.

It's time for the Wings to play a little fuch-fuch.  Teams like Calgary cannot be led along like the 1am sloth, soiled and barely coherent, waiting for a Blues fan to wheel her home...whore style.

Teams like Calgary must be efficiently and mercilessly dispatched of.

Johan Franzen claims he's "pissed."  We've seen pissed before, Mule. We saw it against this very team.

Horrific.  Pierre was beside himself. Bobby Lang was so mad he forgot to check his hair in the glass.  Nick Lidstrom's pulse accelerated to 21 beats per minute. And the Mule?

He was pissed.

Remember? (scroll to 2:14 mark)

That's pissed.

You want to prove your pissed, Johan?  Show us that move again. Move your big ass across the slot and fire away. Holy Hell...when's the last time we saw that move?

Get mad, big boy.

It's a Live Blog, bitches.  6 to 16 and then on to 12.  Just. Get. In.

there are players on the Wings who aren’t happy with him right now.

if that’s the case, then at least now they know how he feels.

It is too easy to scapegoat a lack of consistency on coaching. There’s more to it. This schedule is a beast, travel sucks and people get injured. All of those will cause inconsistencies, and all of those affect some teams more than others. Blame coaches for the tangibles that they cause, but not for the intangible inconsistent plays of known loafers (Franzen, Quincey), serial passers (Filppula, Franzen), or perpetual head-in-ass syndome (Franzen, Quincey). All the best coaching in the world won’t make Ericsson a smarter player. This team is a KNOWN entity, and the jigsaw doesn’t work.

Watch the shorthanded “howard gave up” goal again. He’s in a standing position WAITING for a slow puck to get there. He doesn’t get around the net because someone who’s been sprinting and gliding 100 feet has all the momentum. He’ll either make that shot or miss it, but either way, Howard trying to skate to the net mouth and around the post isn’t going to happen. I could post the math, but physics is more at fault than Jimmy. And besides, I’m not a pharmacist.

The first two goals just drifted in the net. Of course I blame the goaltender. The third was a combination of errors, but, Howard didn’t even attempt to get back. He gave up. That was wrong.

I can’t imagine him saying “Nice Job Mr. Holland. Kyle Quincey was TOTALLY worth the draft pick.”

He’s a good teammate and a professional. I’m sure he feels worse about missing that puck. Once he watches the tape, he’ll probably feel a lot less ownership (hopefully).

This talk of him failing to look like he was trying to do the physically impossible and risking an injury in the process for no good reason reminds me of bosses I’ve had that think they could do what I did, but they could not.

Send Howard a note to flail harder to satisfy your standards of trying. He got left to hang and choked. There was no recovery. He plays the puck successfully or ties up the man and takes a penalty. Getting around the goal before the forward was NOT going to happen, no matter what. Asking him to do otherwise is like yelling at an employee to “look busy.”

It’s a drag, but the wings deserve to slip to 9th. Let’s see if they can get hungry. Let’s see if Babcock puts away his bingo balls and goes with what works.

If you look at the play Jimmah is throwing his arms up before the Puck even gets to him as if to say WTF. The opposing player sees this and charges harder knowing the goalie is in trouble and pounces on the puck scoring. A team guy would at least attempt to lunge at the net in desperation. Did not see that. We have a long time to see if this will affect James or not.
BJ’s win in ot. Time to make diamonds.

Just wanted to point out the stat that I heard/saw somewhere, cant remember. Something along the lines of the wings winning almost every game where they’ve scored three or more goals this year. Its hard to blame a goaltender or a defense if they only have 1 or 2 goals of offense to protect most every night. Case in point tonight’s game. We focus on the two poor goals by Howie and the d but seem to ignore the posts, blown scoring chances, horrible passes and general inconsistency of the offensive corp. Just sayin.

Knew I couldn’t make it to the bitter end with a 5 AM start today, so I watched “Duck Dynasty” for an hour, fell asleep, and had an enjoyable end of day.

Sounds like a good decision on my part.

Here is an interesting bit, we can all attest too:

Once again, Detroit did not start on time (it’s been outshot 56-39 and outscored 2-0 in the first period of its past five games).

In those last 5 games, points DET desperately needed:

v STL:  0-1 L
v SJS:  2-3 OTL
@ CHI:  2-3 OTL
@ NSH: 3-0 W
@ CGY:  2-3 L

4 out of 10 points.

Not - good - enough, not nearly.

I blame FSD.

In the six games preceding the announcement that Murph got canned, the Wings were 5-1. Since then, the team has been 3-5-2.

This is a piece of cake.  All the Wings have to do is win 5 in a row and they will pass the BJs based on the ROW tie breaker.  And we know how likely it is they can win 5 games in a row.

With Murph back in his office, anything is possible.

Of course, it wouldn’t hurt if Babs came down with some sort of highly infectious, though non-fatal, disease that required him to be quarantined for a couple weeks, so some one else could set the lines.

Here is the whole quote:

I think we’re where we should be, to be honest with you. I think we’re battling hard. I’ve heard all year we’re not consistent. We are consistent. You go through each month we’re one game or two games over [.500] each month. This is what we are.”

“This [.500] is what we are” sounds to me like he’s thrown in the towel and he’s just coaching out the string. Though this was new, game after game it’s the same old shit: “I thought we’d have better jump tonight right from the get-go.”  I thought we competed hard tonight, but we didn’t start on time, and we made a couple mistakes.”

And c’mon Babs, you’re stubborn, but even you have to see from period to period, hell, even from shift to shit, the Wings have been horribly inconsistent this year. Which leads to a consistenly mediocre record every month.

I think not only would the players welcome a new head coach, I think Babs would welcome being relieved of his duties. Dude is done, stick a fork in him. I hope the Ilitches can tear themselves away from the Tigers long enough this summer to fire Babs and hire a new coach.

From Teddy Kulfan:

“You go through each month we’re one game or two games over (.500) each month. This is what we are.”

And he’s right. By month, the Red Wings are:

3-2-1 in January;

7-6-2 in February;

7-5-2 in March; and

3-3-2 in April.

Yep.  Consistently mediocre.

Looking at the bright side, at least DET aren’t consistently bad (ala the Dead Things era).  So there is that, anyways.

Just for annoyance and perspective here is the long term conference look over 25 games.  Great race for 4th place and last home ice position.

This is the first time I can remember Babs saying it, though. I would expect him to say that while the team has suffered through significant injuries, the team is better than this and challenge the team to play better. That is why I think not only has the team tuned out Babs, Babs is darn near mailing it in. It was a nice run while it lasted. Even Scotty wore out his welcome in Montreal. Time to move on. Hopefully, somebody from the Ilitch family will say to him, “thanks for your service, Mike and good luck in your future endeavors.”

On your off day, consider this is why the Tigers will win 101 games and the Division.  They are close to the 2002 Red Wings.  This is the best starting pitching rotation in the American League.  Consider this the first line, second line, third and fourth line, they just keep coming at you wave after wave, day after day.  this is why the Tigers will not have a long losing streak.  factor in an explosive first five batters in the order that can hit for average and power.

13/15 games the starting pitching has given up 3 ER or less, none more than 4.  11/15 high quality starts.
Last 7 games starting pitching ERA an arousing 1.29.

The closest thing in hockey to this roster is the Chicago BlackHawks or the Penguins.  Look up and down the Detroit Red Wing roster, slowly mouthing the names of each player, and there is no question why the team is where they are, and why they are in the middle with other teams.
